The reason why you may be able to diagnose an ICE by sound is because they're complex. That's not a positive. An electric motor has just a few moving parts. If it goes bad you don't really need to work to figure it out and fix it.

The rest of the arguments can be made, but as you imply they're disingenuous. The sound one is just not a benefit at all.

Cethin ,

I agree public transport is the better option, but electric cars are a good option for the vast majority of people as long as we're going to need cars.

Cethin ,

"Electric cars are too expensive!"

"I'm only interested in the most expensive of electric cars!"

Cethin ,

How the hell would you break a charge port? If you managed that then no vehicle is safe.

Cethin ,

Oh, the charging station. Charging port I think would mean the port it plugs into on your car. Yeah, I guess that could be an issue, but it's not really something that needs to be considered by a consumer. The fact that you're much less likely to have mechanical issues I think more than makes up for the rare case of vandalism, which can happen to any piece of the infrastructure, for gas and electric.

Cethin ,

It's an extremely unlikely situation, and the same thing can happen with an ICE. An ICE is, in fact, much more likely to experience mechanical failure. For either the solution is the same: you have to get towed.

Luckily if it's just needing a charge there are other options than a fast charge station. You can go to an RV park and get a faster than a regular outlet charge, or go somewhere with a regular power outlet and ask if you can use it. Either of those could require spending the night, depending on how much you need, but it is very unlikely to be required and they are possible.

Society doesn't value people. This applies close to equally for all cis people at least. If you look at the statistics of who makes money (which is normally attributed to value), it values men a little more. (Modern capitalist) society stomps over all individuals though. The individual does not matter except for the wealth that can be extracted from them.

I always thought the solution was to value men inherently too. But that means saying a “you go bro” to incels and other “low value” men.

This makes me think you're not talking about society valuing women, and instead the value women put on their friends (in movies and other media, which isn't always how it works). If your friends put you down instead of lifting you up, that's an issue with your friends, not society. I know my (male) friends (mostly male) generally lift me up. This is an issue you can solve. Either dump your bad friends or encourage the behavior you want to see out of them be doing it yourself.

All chemical propulsion is just controlled explosions that we use to push a thing forward. It's not that different, as long as you don't use it in the atmosphere or near humans.

I don’t totally disagree, but I don’t agree either. Star Trek touches on a lot of issues of today, just from a futuristic perspective. It uses aliens to talk about race, for example. It doesn’t ignore race issues because their society isn’t racist anymore. It just recontextualizes it so people of today will see it and internalize it, but they won’t be offended by it.

The thing that makes great sci-fi is using their lense to examine real topics of today. If it doesn’t do this then it can only be mediocre at best.

Cethin ,

I’m worried about that “88” there. Hopefully they’re just ignorant of what that means.

Cethin ,

So I agree mostly, but classic Trek also had plenty of looking at the present and past showing how bad things were/are/can be. It’s a hopeful message in that we can change and solve problems, but it doesn’t totally ignore issues either.

I do agree the drama and action is a negative for it though. Some amount of its fine, but ST is about considering our reality through the lense of sci-fi and aliens, not just brainless entertainment. Star Wars already exists in that market. ST needs to do what it does well and not worry about trying to be as big as Star Wars. Endless growth is only going to kill the franchise.

Dog’s hairs actually can work like radiators. Their heat transfers to the hair and they have a lot more surface area than skin. I don’t know about huskies and other cold weather dogs, but generally their hair can actually be useful to cool them, not just keep them warm.

Cethin ,

I guess it would be to look up a potential partner? Idk. Doesn’t seem useful or likely a good idea. Unless their name is extremely unique, seeing their name on that list isn’t going to tell you anything. I bet my name is on there hundreds of times.

I’m from Buenos Aires and I say kill 'em all! (The billionaires, not the bugs. Those collectivist creatures were only defending themselves from the imperialists.)

The comment above wasn’t talking about them. He was talking about the CEOs listed here. Time cook makes ~$100m. The company could instead afford to hire ~1000 software developers instead. Is he doing more work than 1000 developers? Certainly not.

I think having the less sanitized version being taught is potentially more valuable. Part of the value of the diary is providing someone to have empathy with, not to just read a history book about a character. Showing that she was a real person and had similar thoughts to all the other children in the class can help them understand she was real and this could happen to anyone, including themselves. It helps us treat history not just as something that happened but something that is happening.

A small amount is good. Deflation makes it so not spending money is more beneficial. The longer you wait to spend the more the money is worth. This causes fewer products and services to be purchased, which pays for wages. Inflation makes the opposite true. The longer you wait to spend your money the less it’s worth. It encourages spending, not saving. Inflation that outstrips increases to pay is obviously very bad though.

    Cethin ,

Most of the time most wages do keep up with inflation. Minimum wage should in a reasonable country as well. Also, most people can totally defer spending some money. Not for food and rent and other necessities, but for other things, like getting your car fixed or things like that that can be pushed off for later.

Gold is not money. Gold is something that some people value but has no value in itself. It’s useful in small quantities for electronics, but other than that it just looks pretty. It has almost no utility. If an apocalypse happens and society fails, gold won’t be worth anything. If people need food, water, shelter to survive, they won’t accept your gold for payment. They can’t eat that. Booze may be a good item that will retain value well, but gold will not.

    Cethin ,

True, yeah. Rent inflation is making things real bad. The past little while almost no wages have kept up with regular inflation even. Generally though, most wages have kept up with both, but recently in particular things have gotten fucked.

Sadly, that’s part of their plan. They are trying to destroy public education, so then they can point to it’s failings to privatize it, even though it’s failing because of them.
