Just don't do what my older brother did and name the cat Lolita.

Seriously.

My parents were actually okay with that too.

Excellent book! I love Orwell and I think it's too bad that most people only go as far as reading Animal Farm and 1984.

He could be funny as well (even while being insightful). Coming Up for Air has some great critiques of the direction Britain was going in before the war, and was fairly prescient about what was to come, while also being extremely funny. It's too bad most people aren't aware of that side of his writing.

So would I, but that's not always possible. Maybe the meaningful jobs aren't available. Maybe you took a job you thought was going to be meaningful but actually turned out to be bullshit, but you need the work and now you're stuck.

I've certainly been in both situations myself.

The communist waiter part is definitely one of my favorites.

His essay Shooting an Elephant should be, in my opinion, required reading in schools. It's probably the best anti-colonialist essay I've ever read.

My favorite part is when he buys the fish sausage.

I think it would make a good movie and I'm surprised no one's done it yet.

Nah, it's just catching some rays. We were right next to a creek.

That's not blood. I don't know what that is. Really, the little guy is fine, or at least was when I left it.

Pope Ruby is welcome to go on a crusade against me any time she likes, as long as it is a kisses crusade.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds like my kind of dog!

I’ve been away from home for a week now and my wife hates getting kisses, but my dogs won’t let her escape since I’m not around to receive them.

Serious question for people younger than me: How did you come up with a signature if you didn’t learn cursive?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yep. 46 here. Rough drafts in print, final drafts in cursive in elementary school.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Not only did it look like a 2 when I learned it, there was a Ramona book where she liked the cursive Q because it looked like a 2.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Just in print?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Everyone I know my age and older signs their name in an approximation of cursive, but in a unique way.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I guess it’s because I have a lot of health issues, but I have to sign my name all the time. Occasionally when I pay with a card too.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t really care how people sign their name if they’re fine with it, but you are honestly the only person around my age that wasn’t taught to sign their name in cursive.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They are not especially useful now, but back before everything was computerized, signing your name on a check or a credit card receipt was a way you could help stop people from committing fraud if they stole your card or your checkbook.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I can respect that.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t remember when I last had to do it, but I definitely remember having to do the stupid ‘sign with your finger’ thing somewhere recently. I’m guessing companies like Square that serve smaller businesses must still do it.

FlyingSquid ,

I have some sort of learning disability when it comes to math. I barely passed math classes in high school. I had one required math class in college, took the “anyone can pass this class” one and still got a C.

So basically, once math is involved, it’s all magic to me.

Hooray magic science!

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It could be, but I don’t mix up numbers, I just can’t grasp concepts. Equations mystify me.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m terrible with human languages too. I barely made it through French.

And computer languages. I’ve tried learning C and Python and Java multiple times and it just baffles me.

So yeah, apparently the language center of my brain is entirely devoted to English.

I really love science and I do try my best to understand it, but I realize I can only ever do so at a superficial level.

@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That may be my problem. My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and although I’ve never gotten an official diagnosis, her symptoms are pretty similar to my experiences, so it’s entirely possible I have ADHD and this is an ADHD thing.

I wish I had a dog that made it to 21. :(

Knights among toner cartridges ( infosec.pub )

(Business people) speaking a language familiar and dear to them. Its portentous nouns and verbs invest ordinary events with high adventure; executives walk among toner cartridges, caparisoned like knights. We should tolerate them - every person of spirit wants to ride a white horse. -William Strunk Jr. (The Elements of Style)

It’s not even the noise that’s the worst part. It’s that you know you can’t scratch your ass without everyone noticing.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That sounds like the exact opposite of fun to me. People shooting shit at me. Can we play D&D or something instead? I mean I don’t particularly want to hang out at work to do something “fun,” but if I have to…

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

When you’re not involved it sucks, but when you are it’s amazing.

Yes, and the people who don’t want to be involved have to just sit there and try to work through that chaos. It’s rude behavior.

Until a dart hits me by mistake when I’m trying to focus on something. Not to mention the distractions.

FlyingSquid ,

Why should I have to get used to it? It’s a job, not a fucking arcade.

I’m glad Randall has taken up the mantle of the great Cecil Adams. Someone had to.

Does anyone here have the Eaglemoss Enterprise D dedication plaque? If so, did you figure out a way to mount it on the wall? ( lemmy.world )

I can’t figure it out. It isn’t huge, but it’s heavy. Specs are 9 x 2 x 12 inches - ‎1.52 pounds. And it’s totally smooth on the back. Nowhere to put a hook. Has anyone figured out a way to do it?...

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The not damaging the paint part is the best news about this method. I will definitely look into it. Thanks!

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think that someone else’s suggestion of command strips is probably easier. I’d have to figure out how to use the library’s 3D printers to do it that way because I don’t have one. They make you take a class to do it too. But thank you for the suggestions.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t even know such things existed! I’m going to the hardware store to pick some up later today.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think the command strips are the best idea because they won’t ruin the paint.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You think that’s confusing… Starfleet was originally UESPA, the United Earth Space Probe Agency. And there have been some very laudable, but still very poor, attempts to reconcile that… especially in Enterprise… but it just makes no sense based on the rest of Star Trek.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe, but it shouldn’t still exist by the time of Charlie X.
