    The best bit:

Attendance had plummeted. Top-tier presidential candidates skipped the September event, and some speakers didn’t show. Guests were baffled by a scoring system that rated their ideology on a scale, from a true conservative to a so-called RINO, or Republican in name only.

    ohlaph ,

    RINO… lol.

    huginn ,

RINO and DINO are two long running “No True Scotsman” purity measures that both parties have swung around.

Mostly you don’t hear DINO anymore.

    JungleJim ,

Democrats couldn’t agree on what their defining viewpoints are for the purity test.

    Dkarma ,

Half of them are literally former Republicans.

    JungleJim ,

You’re right, they’re the ones who couldn’t pass the purity test. Sensing a theme…

    SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

You want to invite as many people into a party as possible to get many viewpoints and more importantly as many votes as possible, right?

    givesomefucks ,

    to get many viewpoints

I don’t think there’s been a single political process in the last 20 years that could have been improved by asking “what do Republicans want?”

Why not ask the third of the country that doesn’t vote what they want?

Their most common complaint is the Dem party is too similar to Republicans and needs to move to the left…

Why not try that and if it works. Wed actually make progress even faster than if we compromised with Republicans

    SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

If you compromised and came to an agreement with some of them then their heads would explode because they’d have to be against it.

    givesomefucks ,

Republicans are like crackheads at gas stations…

Walk in and they’ll tell you a story about how $5 can save them. If you give them the money, and walk out of the store 5 minutes later, they’ll do the same thing to you

Because the story isn’t real, and they want a lot more than $5 from you, they just know $5 is likely to happen.

    SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

What’s the equivalent story that republicans would tell about democrats?

    GombeenSysadmin ,

Surely DINO is the best description for Joe Manchin?

    huginn ,

Manchin represents the actual Democratic party best though.

It’s Bernie who is the outlier, unfortunately

    Agrivar ,

Not calling you a liar, but do you have any sources for the historical usage of DINO? I’ve been following politics for roughly forty years now, and I can’t recall ever seeing that used.

    GreyEyedGhost ,

Search for sinema or Manchin and DINO, and I think you’ll find enough results to indicate it isn’t completely novel, but I (who isn’t American) hadn’t heard the term until they came around.

Yeah, it’s been years since I watched The Flintstones.
