runeko , in What are some less-obvious items that you must have in your shop?

A decent bench with a decent vice. Work holding is key.

More details:

  • The african mahogany has a continuous grain pattern all around the box.
  • It was made with simple miter joints and the splines you see on the image.
  • The bottom is also made with maple.
  • The inner walls are maple that were friction fit.
  • Finished with tung oil.
  • I had to make 2 jigs for this: a cross cut sled with an edge for the 45 degree cuts and a spline jig.
floppingfish ,

Sounds great. Could you please show pictures of the jigs?

Sorry for the delay

Simonbw , in What's the best method to clean up the inner walls without power tools?

I know this is late, but some more details might be helpful. Are we talking about an electric/solidbody guitar, or an acoustic? I don't know about acoustic guitars, cuz they seem like their own thing, but with a solid body guitar, I imagine a wide chisel to get the walls straight, then sanding by hand with increasing grits of sandpaper to just clean up the surface finish. One of those sanding sponges might be helpful.

@Aesculapius beautiful!
OT, but love your username. I have a tattoo of the Rod of Aesculapius/Asclepius. Do you happen to know Panacea??

Thanks! It’s imperfect, but fit for the intended purpose and looks nicer than the table it’s on so… winning?

That looks really good. Do you have any pictures of the drawers?

Not at hand, but they are 1/2” plywood with simple routed grooves on hardwood runners. Two of the three have little 3d printed, scalloped pen “trays”. The third is deep enough for most brands of 50-60 mL ink bottles.

The back is just hardboard set into a rabbet, so this thing looks neat against a wall. It’s also heavier than it looks, lol, and with plenty of, umm, “character”.

floppingfish ,

What do you keep in it?

Looks great!

Fountain pens, mostly. Wouldn’t be hard to repurpose into a small machinist’s chest, though.
