Having Cumberbatch play Khan was by far one of the most egregious examples of Hollywood white washing a character. I don’t care what weird explanation they gave in some comic, to everyone watching the movie, we saw the whitest man on earth, play a guy named Khan Noonien Singh

Reportedly Benicio Del Toro dropped out and Cumberbatch was a last minute replacement.
