Skyline969 , in Does anyone else use old equipment for homelab use? If so, what are you running?
@Skyline969@lemmy.world avatar

I have the CPU and RAM of two PowerVault NX3200s that were destined for the skip jammed into one chassis. It powers one hell of a nice Plex server running on UnRaid.

ParticleUs , in How do you guys feel about pulseway?

We tested out Pulseway a while back but weren’t confident in it’s patching process. We ended up using Action1 because of the price and the simplicity of it. They have a good community on discord that’s always helpful and they’re consistently adding new features. The also host weekly webinars (usually about patching) to help to get up and running.

I guess RMM is a broad term though, cuz I’m not sure about the VPN to AD situation you’re talking about. Are you hosting Pulseway on your own server?

AFAIK Action1 is only cloud-based right now, just install the agent and go. You can also set up a service account on your DC and use their deployer to auto install the agent on domain devices.

possiblylinux127 OP ,

I’ve been testing it as well and you may be right

LUHG_HANI ,
@LUHG_HANI@lemmy.world avatar

Action 1 has been a godsend to me. I tried a few paid rmm suites and they either failed or just had so much bulk it was a minefield.

OmarDontScare , in I'm a sys- and database admin

Hey @ruud, fellow SysAdmin here! Thank you for hosting this Lemmy instance! It’s a great place, uptime has been excellent!

I’ve a question, if you’re willing to give your opinion. Hardware is not cheap and eventually it might become impossible to pay the bills to host this instance.

What kind of support model do you envision for the future of this instance? Donations, subscription, advertisements?

Thanks anyway, and good luck to you!

Edit: I see that donations are already optional. Nice! But i’m still curious, so is there other options you’ve considered for your Mastadon instance for example?

ruud OP ,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

Hi, I think donations will be the way also in the future. Anything non voluntary wouldn’t work because people will just move to other servers that are free. And so far I’ve seen there’s more than enough willingness to donate.

noreply , in Calling all /r/sysadmin reddit refugees!

Who else here was a refugee from Digg to Reddit?

I see a lot of parallels with the path that Reddit is going down that reminds me of the fall of Digg. I see the Reddit API backlash basically being the same as the backlash that Digg v4 got from community members.

TiredAndHappy , in Opinions on Solarwinds Patch Manager vs. Barebones WSUS?

I’ve never used SolarWinds patch manager, but after all of those breaches I’m very leery on any of their stuff. Another option to look into is manage engine patch manager plus. It can be a bit of a pain but it worked decently enough. Also, very cheap. Just don’t expect a super robust and deliable program

TylerHagan1980 ,
@TylerHagan1980@lemmy.world avatar

Manage Engine is what my team (independent of our infrastructure team’s offering) use and we’ll never go back to WSUS since it’s so terrible.

@L3s@lemmy.world avatar

Glad this is here! /r/sysadmin is super useful and hopefully we can create a similar community here.

@DarraignTheSane if you need more mods, I’d be happy to help!

DerTolleEmil , in Calling all /r/sysadmin reddit refugees!

Thank you for creating this community and taking on mod responsibilities.

/r/sysadmin was one of the reasons I got back to reddit in the first place and I hope it does the same for others here in the fediverse.

FYI, I’m not going to remove this post or anything (and I agree as well), but it’s not likely to be seen by the right people here. /c/Sysadmin is just our community for discussing sysadmin things and I don’t know how much /u/Ruud or any Lemmy devs hang out here.

You might try cross-posting it to these communities:

!lemmy_support

Of note, lemmy.ml is the server that is operated by the primary Lemmy devs.

emptyother , in Someone shouldn't be able to have the @admin username
@emptyother@lemmy.world avatar

What if a persons real name is Admin in some weird language?

A bit far-fetched I know. Still, I think that if theres gonna be a global hardcoded blacklist of usernames, someone should be very careful which words is added to that list. Each specific instance would know better what words is good and what is bad in their main language(s).

Eh, why not? It's just a name.

PaintedSnail ,

For those of us who understand how the platform works, it wouldn't be an issue. However, if we want mass adoption of the platform, we need to take into consideration those who don't fully understand the technology and avoid situations that will lead to scams where feasible. Names of authority, like admin, root, super, etc., make a user appear to have authority they don't, which can mislead new users. ("Support our server by sending bitcoin to this address that is really my personal wallet" type scams comes to mind.) You could say that it's the person's fault for falling for it, but it's something that would drive people away from the platform which can be easily avoided in the first place.

TylerHagan1980 , in Hybrid Azure AD users who have been converted to shared mailbox can't be deleted.
@TylerHagan1980@lemmy.world avatar

All scripted: Our leaver’s manager gains access to their mailbox for 30 days, then access is revoked and the user account is unlicensed, and at day 60 the prem user account is deleted. The managers can copy any required emails into their mailbox or a shared mailbox in that 30 day period. There is no reason to keep every leaver mailbox around indefinitely.

giacomo , in Cannot reach one specific IPv6 from one specific network
@giacomo@lemmy.world avatar

How far does a traceroute get you? That could help isolate where the issue may be.

TwinTurbo OP ,

I’ve looked at one, but all that I can tell is I stop reaching things somewhere between my ISP and the datacenter the server is in.

giacomo ,
@giacomo@lemmy.world avatar

I kinda think it may be on the isp then, maybe a v6 routing issue? You could work around with an ipv4 tunnel, then route ipv6 through it. If that’s possible, I’ve never done it haha.

TwinTurbo OP ,

Yeah, ISP-related issue is all I can think of. I can connect to the server over v4 no problem, but the broken v6 connectivity to this particular endpoint is strange and nothing I’ve seen before…

giacomo ,
@giacomo@lemmy.world avatar

I bet they get less reports on ipv6 issues than with ipv4. I have definitely seen carriers have ipv4 routing issues in enterprise networking.
