Alteon ,

Cody is fantastic. His videos are always witty, and his “exhausted; so done with the bullshit” character is just so on point. It’s almost reflective of how so much of us feel, but he’s still there putting up the good fight. I really hope he keeps it up and grows bigger. This dude is destined for great things.

He got fired from Cracked and only got bigger, but I think he also isn’t interested in corporate money, so he may stay this size and be okay with it.

Honestly I like the content but I am so over the character. I just don’t find that stuff funny or useful, it’s too schlocky for me. Same with the anti-cars dude blanking on his name. He has a fantastic video about how parking laws are making all of our suburbs and cities the same more or less, but his presentation style make him really hard to recommend people.

I just think characters like Cody’s only benefit people who already agree with him and enjoy his show, whereas content that is meant to educate/inform needs to reach beyond those boundaries and thus the character becomes a barrier. I’m not saying he can’t ever be that character, but it’s kind of relentless.

Alteon ,

Yeah. I can agree with that. I think he was trying to provide a unique brand a la Colbert Report. I agree it can be a little schlocky, but the information is typically really good. I think one of the biggest improvements he could make would be to do shorter segments. Split his videos up into more videos. He’d get more money by doing it, and the information would likely be easier to digest. It’s a lot of deep dives which can get a little exhausting. Still, he’s fighting the good fight, so I can’t complain too much.

Yeah totally get it. And to be clear thisis a critique not a rant about how much I hate him or something. I also get that part of it is just the culture of YouTube. People say they hate all the clickbait thumbnails and all that stuff, but it drives engagement which means they make more money, so they’re going to keep doing it unless we stop incentivizing it - clearly it works despite what some of us on forums say!

I imagine he does it because it’s rewarded ultimately. I can’t say I would do differently.

Prunebutt ,

Just FYI: It’s not only Codie (and Katy). They have a team of about 10 people.

People generally understand that. When they talk about what Colbert said last night, they know he has a team of writers. He talks about them sometimes. (Seth Myers talks about them every night.) I think it’s obvious just thinking about it for a minute that Cody and Katy need a staff doing research and helping write the episode.

Prunebutt ,

I was just a bit confused when the other comment always talked about “him”.

Channels where the bulk of the work is done by one person are quite common on Youtube (Hbomberguy, Stephanie Sterling, …), so I think that when a team or different writers are behind (mostly) one front-facing person, it’s kind of important to remember that.

I agree, I just also think the Cody Showdy is clearly more professional than the one-man-show operations, but maybe it’s not clear to others?
