Rentlar , to U.S. News in President Biden: student loan borrowers enrolled in SAVE “who took out less than $12,000 in loans and have been in repayment for 10 years will get their remaining student debt cancelled immediately"

My uneducated guess is that banking corps getting “harmed” by the fact they can’t suck money out of their borrowers will have to spend more effort putting each order through the courts.

At the very least, the more times that Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan is blocked like this, it will get it into voters’ heads that it’s not the President and Democratic party’s failure to act but co-ordinated obstruction by Republicans and the financial institutions.

Dang, if he’s not going to get his citizenship instated, he might as well spend his retirement committing crime for fun under diplomatic immunity.

Rentlar , to U.S. News in Ohio voters enshrine abortion access in constitution in latest statewide win for reproductive rights

I’m so glad that restrictive resolution in Ohio’s August special election didn’t pass, that would have nullified this result, as Republicans were hoping to do through that.

As soon as money got involved, it became no longer free, in either sense.

Rentlar , to U.S. News in Americans Are Losing Faith in the Value of College. Whose Fault Is That?

Well, if the years of study, understudy and residency living broke and getting nickel-and-dimed by everyone and everything wasn’t enough, now Americans can come out with a crippling debt several times that takes another bunch of years to pay off, hooray!

Rentlar , to U.S. News in Companies That Union-Bust Must Now Automatically Recognize Union, NLRB Rules

This is good news and probably the best the Biden admin can do for now on this front given the circumstances.

It’s up to workers now to organize and for voters to deliver for workers’ rights at the ballot box.

Rentlar , to U.S. News in Wisconsin Supreme Court flips liberal, creating a ‘seismic shift’

It would be nice to have an apolitical court tied to principles of honesty, integrity and justice. Sadly, this is the state of the court instead:

The conservative bloc includes one justice who occasionally votes with the liberals, such as when he joined them in a 4-3 opinion to reject Donald Trump’s request to overturn his presidential loss in the state. The other conservatives sided with Trump.

“Giving up political associations” is way easier said then done. In particular because reality appears to lean liberal to a significant number of conservatives.

Rentlar , to U.S. News in Undercover With the New Alt-Right

My physical profile could potentially fit in with some of these groups but I would have a tough time keeping myself from rolling my eyes and pretending to enjoy this sort of talk even for ten minutes.

You’d need a specific mix of journalistic talent, patience for nutheads like the stars of this article, the ability to keep up an in-person alter-ego for months and charm (you could tell Mr. Nelson was a little into Ms. Moore).

A big takeaway from the article for me was the mention of how “each sect of the Republican Party each had their methods”, it made me think of the different sects, their methods and desires:

  • Big Business Republicans providing the money and legal influence, pushing for tax breaks, looser regulations and cuts to public services
  • Far-right white nationalists recruiting from the side, casually inserting themselves in important positions with a mellowed view hoping to take over the "big tent"
  • Religious conservatives (including evangelists) pushing a homophobic, misogynist agenda through their services and lobbying for their version of religion be taught everywhere
  • Rural (redneck) conservatives believing and spreading strange conspiracies and stuff, lobbying for gun rights, also racist/anti-immigrant
  • Old conservatives wanting things to return to “the way it used to be”, often including racist, homophobic and anti-immigrant takes.

It’s like some five-headed chimera fusion, who as long as they don’t get in each other’s way seem to be able to coexist. Interestingly about this article is that it focused on the people and things around Inmate rather than Inmate himself, which was refreshing.

Rentlar , to U.S. News in ‘Let Maui heal’: Grieving Hawaii residents want tourists to go home

How we handle fiires and various other tragedies up here: people across Canada donate, they support causes, neighborring communities stand up to help feed and house people displaced by disaster. Federal, provincial and town governments come together to make sure people evacuate safely and are supported. A person’s “job” is like 20th if at all on the list of priorities.

Tourists are clueless and obnoxious anywhere you go in the world. But Hawaii residents and fellow American people need to look out for each other, island, state and federal governments need to look out for the affected residents.

I’m saying it should not even be a question whether one should be obligated to go to work in such a disaster. Going to work miserably to me is a failure on society’s part. It’s the tourism industry, government and people at large ignoring the residents’ needs.

Rentlar , to U.S. News in ‘Let Maui heal’: Grieving Hawaii residents want tourists to go home

Hawaii is not immune from the American mindset and cultural pressure of “the job being more important than the people/family”.

If people were really upset with tourists coming, they could walk off the job to go and support their family except for the people tasked with sending tourists away. It’s American work culture that abandons people who would do that.

Rentlar , (edited ) to U.S. News in 'Barbenheimer' highlights U.S. ignorance of nuclear reality

(TW/movie spoiler second paragraph)

OK I get Japanese people take things seriously and are upset, and it’s easy to laugh at something like Barbenheimer when the consequences of atomic bombings are mostly on another continent. I write this on a day of immense tragedy for the world, after the bomb it was apparent that human suffering can know no bounds if we don’t make an effort to live in peace.

Did the author really watch the same Oppenheimer I did? I think Christopher Nolan did more than his due diligence on the matter. The scene with the speech and the thunderous applause juxtaposed with harrowing scenes of Japanese civilians being burnt alive was far and away the most gut-wrenching part of the film.

Like fuck, we really fucking did that to people. That should really make anyone stop and think.

That said, I don’t mind the fact that people make light of two contrasting movies releasing the same day. Let people have their humour, especially to cope for something so dark and tragic.
