The X Window System is 40, archaic as heck, and still relevant

One astrophysics professor's memories of writing X11 code in the 1980s.

@arstechnica the original and best "X".

One of the richest men in the 1920s was Andrew Mellon — an early prophet of trickle-down economics.

Yesterday we learned that his grandson, Timothy Mellon, gave a Trump super PAC one of the largest political donations ever.

This is how dynastic wealth works.

Wealth tax now.

@rbreich the rich love to demonize "wealth redistribution" but when you think about it the opposite of it is the real demon. There's a whole wealth caste who are born to never have to work and pay little or no taxes for the privilege of their wealth dividend streams. For as long their are in control of the government representatives via "donations" aka BRIBES they will continue to hoover up more and more wealth like black holes.

A "Stop the Steal" flag reportedly flew at the home of Justice Samuel Alito, just days after Jan 6.

Alito not being forced to recuse from Trump's immunity case and upcoming Jan 6 cases tells you everything you need to know about the new SCOTUS code of "ethics."

It's a sham.

@rbreich
I kind of object to the upside down US flag being oopted by MAGA. When it was shown widely by the left after Trump was elected the MAGA contingent lost their shit about it. Now they get to use it with impunity?

The reality is only one party is trying to destroy America. The US in distress is their doing and they cannot fly the flag that way without projecting their true intent to do so.

The world's billionaires now hold a combined $14.2 trillion in assets.

That exceeds the GDP of every country in the world except the US and China.

And we’re supposed to believe the ultra-wealthy can’t afford a wealth tax?

@rbreich the crazy thing is if you took all of their money, doubled it, and you still wouldn't have enough to pay off America's public debt.

After a one-year delay, Google might finally launch its “Find My” network

Google promised to wait for Apple to launch cross-platform "unwanted tag" detection.

@arstechnica can we say FINALLY? Now if only they hadn't shortsightedly restricted UWB support to their "Pro" phones for the last three iterations they might have a robust network of longer range high accuracy devices to detect them...

Meanwhile what tags with UWB support are going to work with it from day one? The Peeblebee and Chipolo sites do not say anything about it. And if Apple and Google networks don't work together it seem Google will be severely handicapped in terms of user base.

It’s no accident: These automotive safety features flopped

Over the years, inventors have had some weird ideas about how to make cars safer.

@arstechnica but did they ever try the 6 inch metal spike sticking out of the center of the steering wheel? I bet people would drive away more carefully if they had one of those installed.
