xyguy , (edited ) to homelab in Network setup help

I don't have a ton of faith in tplink to continue to support omada over the long term. They've also been somewhat slow to fix security problems in the past. For the same price as the omada ap you can get unifi u6 lites.

You can still run your own controller and i can vouch thaf a couple of them can cover an entire moderately sized house. I run 2 at home with pfsense on an ewaste tier dell optiplex and have for years without trouble.

I've never messed with opnsense but I assume it works just as well.

Also what type of connection are you getting from your ISP? If its a fiber connection you may be able to buy an SFP network card and replace the modem altogether.

xyguy OP , to Star Trek in Dr. Pulaski Appreciation Post

This video sums up my feelings exactly. Thanks for the recommendation. They are a lot more articulate than I was.

xyguy OP , to Star Trek in Dr. Pulaski Appreciation Post

I think that's something that gets forgotten. Season 2 gets skipped through a lot during rewatches I know. All anyone remembers is her being racist to data.

She starts out mean to Data but she comes around by the end of the season. She is also a former lover of Kyle Riker, which could have made for a much more interesting dynamic for and with Riker if it had continued.

I agree. And its a real shame. I also remember seeing Pulaski sitting in the chair next to Picard relatively often where I think of Crusher being in the medical bay far more. That could just be my own memory though.

xyguy , to Work Reform in Poll: 61% of young adults confess they are not saving for retirement

The only retirement plan for me is to move somewhere where it doesn't get cold in the winter and be homeless. So far that's what I can afford.

xyguy OP , to homelab in Intel ARC GPU in XCPNG Passthrough

I'm banking on continued driver improvements and hopefully some big price drops when the B series of ARC finally launches.

I also like the idea that the A380 it doesn't require pcie power cables. You could theoretically add one to an appropriately large 2nd pcie slot as a second GPU in a server or a workstation.

I just say that video from Wendell. Looks promising.

xyguy , to Star Trek in “Untitled Star Trek Origin Story” film officially added to Paramount Pictures' 2025-2026 lineup.

I think they mean Seth Grahme-Smith, author of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.

So I'm down. Please not too many pew pew space battles. You can include Abe Lincoln if appropriate. That is precedented and canonical for Star Trek.

xyguy , to Home Improvement in Siding repair

Our claim we got all up front but that is all good info to know. Thanks!

xyguy , to Home Improvement in Siding repair

Just had our roof and siding redone after hail damage. We were told that the exterior insulation built into the siding was minimal and not worth the extra cost for the benefit. If you already have it and it just needs repaired that’s a different story.

From what we could tell, the main difference between exterior contractors was the brand of shingles and siding they use and how they structure their quotes. The job is pretty much the job other than if you choose to do different types of siding on different parts of the house.

We chose our contractor based on someone else we know that had good experience with them and them being local to us in case we had any issues or wanted to make a warranty claim (they offered a 5 year workmanship guarantee). Pretty much all roofing people also do siding. Most do windows too. Our guy did windows, roofing, siding, insulation and gutters despite only having “roof” in his business name.

Just get 3 quotes and see who you like. Also, if you are doing anything through an insurance company, DO NOT sign anything from an exterior contractor to let them negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf. If they came door to door, that’s often something they will ask for. Just assume that most of those door-to-door folks are in the same category as ambulance-chasing lawyers and don’t trust them at all.

Also, if you are going through insurance and the contractor wants to see your claim, remove all dollar amounts from the claim before you share it. Let them give a quote based on what they value the job at rather than based on how much money they know for a fact you have.

Also also, it’s illegal in a lot of jurisdictions, if not all, for a contractor to tell you that they will reimburse or refund the amount of an insurance deductible if you make a claim or if you choose them to do the work. So if any of them said that it’s immediately shady if not downright illegal.

xyguy OP , to Star Trek in Possible headcanon reason why consoles always explode on the bridge

They did that one time on Undiscovered Country. I guess that was a Klingon ship though.

xyguy OP , to Star Trek in In a way, Tasha Yar's fate actually worked out really well for the series

Definitely all true. But the implication that she was made into a Romulan love slave, especially after having established her backstory always rubbed me the wrong way.

Funny you should mention that 1000002173

xyguy , to Star Trek in Thoughts on fixing production mistakes in remasters?

That’s a tricky question. In some way, an unintentional error being corrected later makes sense. Especially since something like a sound effect doesn’t change the plot. It’s sort of akin to using digital effects to remove visible wires from model-based space shots.

But where does it end? I don’t know if I have a good answer.

Sometimes I like to make up headcanon to justify mistakes for fun. For instance, maybe the paging system on the Defiant blew out on a mission and O’Brien had to wire in a Cardassian chime temporarily while he waited for a new part to get ordered.

xyguy , to Star Trek in Just some fun size comparisons

It’s even funnier when you hear the Sisko’s initial description of the defiant.

It’s a warship, nothing more, nothing less.

And also

No families, no science labs, no luxuries of any kind…

Meanwhile it’s almost as big as the OG Enterprise which did in fact have a regulation size bowling alley inside.

So all that space, basically just for engines and guns on the Defiant.
