Why’d you use coercion episode to highlight this tho? Its the only episode I know of where he isnt enthusiastically consenting.

Right? They play Riker being coerced into sex for laughs. It's the worst bit of the episode and if any other character were the target it would be very obvious why.

bevan OP ,

Yes it was a jarring point in an otherwise great episode. But I still think it was still a Riker approach to the problem. Worf would never accepted the proposal and (gently) knocked out Lanel and then rushed the single guard at the door.

SkaveRat ,

I’m not sure it’s coersion per se. While he was aprehensive at first, it was more like “okay, I can’t really go down on this alien right now or my cover will be blown”.

There’s a difference between “not really into it, sorry” and “I don’t think it’s a good time right now” (and being asured otherwise)

optissima ,

He was pressured into sex tho, which is by definition coercion. Thats why I went on to state that he wasn’t enthusiastically consenting too, to be clear that its definition is the line I’m using for coercion.

Just to be clear, if someone says no and you have sex, that is always rape regardless, even if they would’ve said yes at another time.

“First Contact” (the episode, not the movie) is a nice little TNG gem which is often overlooked on the “best of” lists. There’s lots of talking and diplomacy, so TNG at its best. It’s also mostly shown from the perspective of the aliens, so that’s a nice change for once. It’s one of my favorite episodes.

feedmecontent ,

I agree that this was a great episode. The relationship between the leader and his backward aide was done beautifully and it was really poignant how the aide got his way by proving he’s a jackass.

To be fair, studies have shown that workaholics forced to take OSHA mandated work breaks perform better on average than when breaks are not enforced.

He’s so chill these days about food, but when he wants attention that’s it. He’s so big there is no way of working around him.

Are you sure it’s not a “feed the cat” break?

Speaking of furbabies helping:

My step mom has actually trained her and my dad’s dog Bjørk to help out in the garden! When she needs a small hole or some soil loosened, she’ll just point to the spot and Bjørk digs exactly there! Bjørk is a very good girl 🥰

We have a Maine Coon named Lyra. She insists on being heavily involved in everything we do. We should get our girls together, maybe they’ll teach each other to chill. 😄

evanuggetpi OP ,

I’ve never known a cat to be as vocal as she is. Ragdolls are generally quiet (my giant male can only manage a pathetic kitten sized meow) but she is something else.

I would love a Maine coon! I like big cats. We have two rescues as well who are amazing in their own way, but there’s something about the majesty of really big cats that gets me.

Mediocrates ,

Our Lyra is a vocal girl, too. Every little thing engenders a “mrrp.” Drives us crazy sometimes. She’s a very smart cat and I think she’s frustrated she can’t talk like the Big Cats.

We like all cats, but big cats are just big, solid creatures. As the song goes, “I like big cats and I cannot lie.”

According to Aerosmith and Disney, she’s living in a movie and that movie is Aladdin 😉

PS: she’s gorgeous and adorable 😍

Those’re some absolutely gorgeous floofs there. Especially the Ragdoll(?) - I have a soft spot for those!

evanuggetpi OP ,

Yes, that’s a ragdoll. He is huge, super quiet and very docile. I have an old female ragdoll who is, in contrast, very loud and demanding. If her food isn’t ready by 7am the whole house hears her displeasure.
