Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Discovery | 5x10 "Life, Itself"

LoglineSeries Finale. Trapped inside a mysterious alien portal that defies familiar rules of time, space, and gravity, Captain Burnham must fight Moll – and the environment itself – in order to locate the Progenitors’ technology and secure it for the Federation. Meanwhile, Book puts himself in harm’s way to help Burnham...

This was ... a DISCO episode.

Lengthy but meaningless action sequences? Check.
Shaky cams all the damn time? Check.
People talking about their feelings at the worst possible moment? Check.
No apparent command structure and people just doing whatever they want? Check.
One-dimensional villains? Check.
Flamethrowers on the bridge? Check. (although, to be honest, those are so absurd that I'll actually miss them)

I liked the future scenes because they were noticably slower and cerebral than pretty much anything that Discovery did during its five seasons. I wish they would have done something like that more often.

But yeah, that's it. I'm somewhat glad it's over. I liked the first two seasons of the show. Despite their flaws I appreciated that they've tried something new in the Star Trek franchise. And ultimately that led to Strange New Worlds, so I'll have to give them credit for that. Anything after the season 3 time jump was not my cup of tea though. There was never enough worldbuilding for my taste because so much screentime was devoted to Burnham and Book, and that meant that the 31st century never really felt "real" to me.

Maybe I'll rewatch seasons 1 and 2 somewhere down the line but I have no interest in watching seasons 3-5 again. I'll just treat them as Burnham's fever dream or something like that.

They're both cartoon villains. It works for a comedy movie, not so much for a serious TV show.

For a split second, when they looked at the paper with the list of scientists, I had hope that the Discovery would fly to Denobula. That would have been so much more interesting than what we've gotten. Although I give them credit for doing a more traditional Star Trek episode with a bunch of technobabble, prime directive shenanigans and the obligatory human-like pre-warp civilization.

Our thinking was the Breen as sort of a natural species were bifurcated in the sense that they can be both gelatinous and solid in that sense. But the solid state takes an intense amount of focus and concentration in order to maintain. [...] And then as they developed the refrigeration suits, they lost the need for that both evolutionarily and culturally, and it became a sort of cultural anathema. You don’t show people your solid face because that means you’re weak. It means you’re stupid. It means you’re slow.

I still don't get it. It doesn't really make sense to me. If it takes a lot of focus and concentration to maintain the solid form, why is one considered weak for doing so?

Breen ship! We’ve never seen the inside

Technically we've seen a holding cell inside a Breen ship in DS9.

I think I haven't enjoyed Disco this much since season 2. This was a great episode in the tradition of whacky time travel episodes. And I really liked seeing the old uniforms, set designs, and Discovery exterior. Mainly because I like those designs much more than the 32nd century upgrades. The sort-of tie-in to the "Calypso" Short Trek also worked really well. And Linus was great as usual.

Meanwhile, the adventures continue for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which has been renewed for season 4.

At least there's that.

It's still surprising that Lower Decks ends so soon. It's well received and should be reasonably cheap to produce. Why would they axe it?

As a DS9 fan I appreciated the many references to the Zian'tara, Dominion War and Tzenkethi.

I wasn’t too impressed by the first two episodes. There were some good parts in it – most notably the actor who played Fred – and I liked the more upbeat tone compared to previous seasons. But ultimately it felt like watching Star Wars. I was bored by the prolonged action sequences in both episodes. They are just a showcase for the talent of the VFX people but the scenes feel empty and meaningless.

I’ll keep watching but only because I know it’s the final season. There are just too many of the same old Disco tropes for me to really enjoy this show. A prime example was the scene aboard the Romulan ship: Burnham beams over with Rhys and Owo…only for them to be incapacitated so that the main character can continue on her own. I know, I know, Disco is not meant to be an ensemble show and that’s okay. But it just doesn’t work for me.

“First Contact” (the episode, not the movie) is a nice little TNG gem which is often overlooked on the “best of” lists. There’s lots of talking and diplomacy, so TNG at its best. It’s also mostly shown from the perspective of the aliens, so that’s a nice change for once. It’s one of my favorite episodes.

UESPA_Sputnik ,
@UESPA_Sputnik@lemmy.world avatar

The mention of >!Rachel Garrett!< in the Section 31 movie points to a time travel storyline, doesn’t it? Or at least some holodeck stuff. (Maybe the movie ends with “Computer, end program.” 😄)

UESPA_Sputnik ,
@UESPA_Sputnik@lemmy.world avatar

Hopefully this means that the episodes in season 5 really are distinctive. My problem with Discovery (and Picard) is that all the episodes of a season blend into each other. It’s super difficult to remember individual episodes because each of them is just a tiny puzzle piece of a larger story.

UESPA_Sputnik ,
@UESPA_Sputnik@lemmy.world avatar

So there are several special Riker action figures but no “regular” Riker action figure with a proper uniform? There’s only the one with the torn uniform top.

Weird decision.

Excerpt regarding the story:

!While plot details haven’t been shared, we do have an understanding of when the movie will take place decades before the original 2009 Star Trek film. This is very confusing, as the 2009 star trek film takes place across multiple years, and multiple timelines. This might mean decades before the main events of the movie. The main events of 2009 take place in the Kelvin Timeline in 2255. However the Kelvin timeline only started in 2233. So if this takes place anytime before 2233, it would be canonical to both the Kelvin and Prime timeline.!<

!The other option is that it takes place decades before the events of the movie in the prime timeline, in 2387. An option this movie has is to tie into the backstory of Star Trek: Picard, and possibly even explain why the Romulan Sun went supernova in the first place! I doubt this will be the case, as it will probably be set in the Kelvin Timeline, sometime after the Narada destroys the U.S.S. Kelvin.!<

Sounds to me like it’ll be >!taking place in the prime timeline either way!<.

This sounds pretty good actually because it addresses my main concern with DISCO after the time jump. There has been almost no world building in the last two seasons. The 32nd century still feels like a blank canvas and a wasted opportunity. Particularly season 4 could have taken place during any other era without needing to change anything about the story.

And that they don’t drag out the mystery is a huge plus too.

I’m much more optimistic about season 5 now.

Canon Connections: 2x07 - Those Old Scientists

• In the episode “No Small Parts” Ransom explains to Captain Freeman that he calls the 2260s the ”TOS Era” in honour of ”Those Old Scientists” like Spock and and Scotty. Of course, this episode takes place in 2259, so clearly it’s time for a shake-up among the SNW production team....

UESPA_Sputnik ,
@UESPA_Sputnik@lemmy.world avatar

Worf suffered discommendation and was stripped of his honour in “Sins of the Father”.

By the time Boimler is around Worf had gotten his honour back…and lost it again, and got it back… I think. It’s hard to keep track. But his family honor was restored in "Redemption’ for helping Gowron in the civil war.

I wonder if the VFX department didn’t get the memo.

It could also be an early script draft and during production they decided not to spend time and money on changing the ship model. Not everything you see in a script will end up on the screen.

UESPA_Sputnik ,
@UESPA_Sputnik@lemmy.world avatar

It was present at the end of the episode where Voyager got the future Borg technology. This scene from the linked script is the scene from the very beginning of the episode which depicts a timeline in which Voyager returns to Earth without that Borg encounter.

In a season that’s been a wee bit hit and miss IMHO (compared to S1)

Yeah, the first half was very uneven. But I’ve enjoyed every episode since episode 5, so I guess they found their stride again.

UESPA_Sputnik ,
@UESPA_Sputnik@lemmy.world avatar

What a tonal shift from the last episode.

I think this was on par with DS9’s Dominion War episodes, showing how the Federation ideals clash with the real world. It will certainly be controversial for being so “un-Trek”. There’s no happy ending, there’s just the sinking feeling that a war never really ends in the heads of those that were affected by it.

The acting was stellar all around, particularly M’Benga and Chapel. [Edit: and Ortegas! Finally she got some material to work with that weren’t funny one-liners, and she made the most of it.] And that final scene with M’Benga and Pike just demands a continuation in the future.

It was certainly an impressive, thought-provoking episode but if you’d ask me to rate this episode on a scale of 1 to 10 I’d have no idea where to put it. I’m still sitting here trying to wrap my head around what I just saw. I guess that’s war for you. It doesn’t make sense.

UESPA_Sputnik ,
@UESPA_Sputnik@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed on the Klingon ambassador! The acting felt weird at first but his demeanor made sense at the end.

And I feel similarly as you about M’Benga. I didn’t care much about him until now, he was simply the doctor that speaks strangely. But now I really want to find out what’s next for him.

Fun episode. I lost track of all the references but I’m particularly delighted that they brought up the NX-01 and her crew, and that the NCC-1701 crew (what even comes after the dash?) is gushing over them, like we all are gushing over all the different Trek crews.

UESPA_Sputnik ,

This will either be really fun or total nonsense. I like that they’re trying new things instead of only recycling old Trek tropes with aliens that have a different kind of bump on the forehead.

Spock cleaned up Sam Kirk’s mess once again. That’s why he approached the table. (and I presume that’s why that one snippet from last week was in the “previously on” segment)

UESPA_Sputnik ,

An okay episode.

Finally Una got to do something instead of being completely on the sidelines. The whole ensemble got something to do, except Ortegas who slowly turns into SNW’s Travis Mayweather: that one cast member that is just there physically but doesn’t get anything to do.

My personal highlight was the scene were Spock and Chapel play chess, and he passive-aggressively pushes her to play faster. Very Vulcan.

What irked me: everyone and their mother immediately started calling the First Officer of another Starfleet ship by his first name. That was weird.

The Canon defenders will complain that Kirk and Pike met face to face, although there was that throwaways line in The Menagerie that they’ve never met. But it was kinda inevitable that it would happen sooner or later. At least we got that out of the way.

Another weird thing was Pike’s promotion to Fleet Captain. We’ve never seen this in Star Trek, particularly not when it’s just two ships on a mission. So I checked the transcript of The Menagerie were Kirk speaks about the one time he met Captain Pike. And there it is:

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?
KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.

SNW’s producers were sneaky with that one. I’m both annoyed and impressed.

While the third season had its flaws they certainly hit all the right emotional notes. I must have watched those final 5 minutes dozens of times when it first aired because I just couldn’t believe what happened. Not necessarily what happened on screen but what happened to me. I felt like that kid again that watched TOS reruns and TNG, I felt like there’s a brighter future ahead because my heroes did once again instill hope. When the lights came on on the bridge – in stark contrast to the dimly lit 8½ episodes before it – suddenly it felt like anything would be possible. Not just in this TV show. But really anything.

Maybe I’m a bit theatrical but in those five minutes I forgot all my worries (which is quite a feat because I’m one of those broody persons) and felt like I was coming home. I’ve never felt anything like that when consuming any sort of media.

Thanks to everyone involved. I’ll cherish those five minutes forever.

“This is irregular. A complaint outside the response period.” - those aliens are Germans. 😄

Great episode. Just the right amount of whackiness to not make it too ludicrous. And it wasn’t just comedy, at its core this episode had a human heart - no pun intended - with Spock connecting to his mother’s burden.

One thing that I realized, once again, is that I don’t really know what Una’s job on the Enterprise really is. She’s barely doing anything. You’d expect her to accompany the away team at the end of the episode (or did they steal the shuttle, now that they know how to steal the Enterprise). For an XO she’s barely noticeable. This isn’t a complaint about this episode, it’s a thread that runs throughout the series.

To end on a positive note: can those costume designers finally get an award please? The outfits on this show are always so stunning.

Edit: I just realized that the episode was written by Kathryn Lyn who also wrote one of Lower Decks’ funniest episodes, “wej Duj”. She seems to become Star Trek’s go-to gal for comedy.

Maybe it’s finally time for Star Trek to boldly go … for polyamory.

Canon Connections: Strange New Worlds 2x04 - Among the Lotus Eaters

• The title refers to the Homer’s “Odyssey” when Odysseus’ voyage reached the land of the Lotus-eaters. These people’s primary food source was the fruit and flowers of the lotus, which was powerfully narcotic, and caused those of Homer’s crew who ate it to forget their desire to return home....

The files specifies, “Lieutenant Ortegas is a 23rd century Federation Starfleet officer.” Presumably it’s necessary for the files to have information about the century in which an officer serves due to all the time travel.

I mean, we had Ben Sisko and Kassidy Yates who both were captains. But I agree with you that Pike and Batel really seem to be equals, and I really like that relationship dynamic.

As I said, from the pilot episode I got the impression that they are friends with benefits who like to hook up when they happen to be in the same sector – no strings attached. (underlined by the fact that Pike had a fling with that lady from the child-killing planet) I think that could be an interesting relationship dynamic to explore because unlike Kirk who had a chick on every planet (with rather unequal dynamics), Pike and Batel both have found someone equal with all the limitations that the jobs brings with it.

I just hope the writing for Batel was an exception in this week’s episode because it didn’t make her look good – being overly emotional and storming off after Pike just stated some facts. I don’t think that’s the type of female character they should be aiming for nowadays.
