As a libertarian, I’m half frozen with fear, half animated by excitement of what is going to happen in Argentina. It’s the chance of a lifetime for the ideal, which means that it can go brilliantly, or spectacularly balls up and lead to nobody ever taking the idea seriously in like three decades.

That’s how long it took from the fall of Soviet Union to people taking communism seriously again.

The historical record shows that Argentina will get the libertarian monkey’s paw wish of a Bartertown hellscape. We already know who wins here: the capitalist class that is now buying the newly privatized commons at fire sale prices. And we know who loses: the working class.

Argentina isn’t Chile (as in: not a military dictatorship heavily influenced by CIA [as far as we know]), though, and I’m not aware of any other examples of anything similar being attempted. Except in speculative fiction. Do you have such examples that I have missed?

Many such cases. Chile was the test run for the past 50 years of neoliberal shock therapy.

Whether shock therapy comes from the tip of a spear or an IMF debt trap or an elected clown like Milei is neither here nor there.

Chile’s liberalization was an absolute success in economic terms, so you’re kinda proving my point here.

I would explain to you how GDP is bullshit, but you wouldn’t be interested, and no one else is following this old thread 100 replies deep, so I’ll leave things here.

    fosforus ,

    Fair enough.

When it comes to right wing libertarians, the only proper response is fear.

    fosforus ,

    Well that sounds just irrational.

Do you think that if instead of Republicans we had an equal amount of Libertarians, the world would be a better or a worse place?

If the satanists were performing unwilling human sacrifices. It would be a very apt comparison. Your comparison is the irrational and absurd one. The Temple of satan and even the church of satan generally don’t get as many people killed as eager contradictions like right wing libertarians do defending their corporate masters.

I mean look at you. Here you are defending them even as Milieu takes away people’s social freedom. If you were actually concerned about freedom, you’d be as aghast as most other people here. But nope, you’re going to defend it. Because right wing libertarians will never recognize social freedom, only personal freedom.

    fosforus ,

Milieu takes away people’s social freedom.

    Do elaborate.

Whatever you say dude, you don’t believe in sources anyways.

    fosforus ,

    What are you talking about?
