If you can live without working, go ahead. If not, you work.

Seems pretty selfish to me

Yes

No

fosforus ,

I’m now freelance musician and teacher and I’m on track to make more than any employer paid me.

That’s great! Is there some part of this that you think doesn’t fit into free market capitalism? Seems like you’re living the original american dream there.

fosforus ,

Clearly more than the average, but not “most”. Last I remember the figure was something like 12%.

In a small company it sure makes a difference if your senior management are sociopaths, but if the company is large enough that you’ll never see the CEO I’m not sure what difference does it make that he doesn’t care about you personally.

fosforus ,

Everyone should prioritize life over work.

I agree. But also: nobody should expect others to carry them. You have to balance these two things in your life.

Since many people here are American, I feel like I need to clarify a bit. I live in a country where almost nobody works over 7,5h per day. And when they do, every hour is compensated for, sometimes with 150%/200% surcharge. I find it extremely weird that some people in a 1st world country work overtime for free, or generally speaking “work” over 8 hours per day in intellectual work on a regular basis.

I see my whole generation being burnt out of this however.

I see that happening too, but at the same time I’m also witnessing their workload and demands on them being smaller than what it used to be (already at school), and their work conditions being greatly improved compared to previous times. There’s clearly a systemic problem somewhere, as I don’t think whole generations can suddenly be simply worse than previous ones, but at the same time it’s crystal clear that the problem is not “too much work”.

Jonathan Haidt has written about this a few times before[0], and his latest book[1] is coming in a few months. Should be interesting.

Millennials are some of the first to have to be “always on” with constant emails, and Slack, and companies monitoring their every move on their phones and laptops,

I totally agree. And in addition to “having to be” always on, we very often also choose to be always on. This is one of the biggest problems of our generation, I think, and I’m not seeing any attempts at fixing it. If anything, we’re trying to make it worse.

fosforus , (edited )

His ideas don’t look plausible to me at all. It sounds like he just wants attention.

Perhaps read the book first? I’m sure it’s available from piracy sites if you don’t want him to have your money. Ignoring a thing you disagree with initially is a great way to never improve intellectually.

fosforus ,

And that’s not how any of this works at all. Zero-sum game this is not.

fosforus ,

Ok, so … Biden’s economic policies are worse than Trump’s were?

Or perhaps a tiny thing called war in Europe and worst pandemic in a century is having some teeny tiny effects in world economy. But when you detect a fire inside your house, it’s often smarter to use a fire extinguisher to douse it, not gasoline.

fosforus ,

Could they represent Ukraine against Russia with the same energy?

No? Gee, surprise.

fosforus ,

If logic was a thing Trump or his supporters cared or knew about, that might be a good angle.

As a libertarian, I’m half frozen with fear, half animated by excitement of what is going to happen in Argentina. It’s the chance of a lifetime for the ideal, which means that it can go brilliantly, or spectacularly balls up and lead to nobody ever taking the idea seriously in like three decades.

That’s how long it took from the fall of Soviet Union to people taking communism seriously again.

    fosforus ,

    Well that sounds just irrational.

Do you think that if instead of Republicans we had an equal amount of Libertarians, the world would be a better or a worse place?

Argentina isn’t Chile (as in: not a military dictatorship heavily influenced by CIA [as far as we know]), though, and I’m not aware of any other examples of anything similar being attempted. Except in speculative fiction. Do you have such examples that I have missed?

    fosforus ,

    What are you talking about?

    fosforus ,

Many such cases. Chile was the test run for the past 50 years of neoliberal shock therapy.

Chile’s liberalization was an absolute success in economic terms, so you’re kinda proving my point here.

Milieu takes away people’s social freedom.

    Do elaborate.

    fosforus ,

    Fair enough.

    fosforus ,

    Stop using Discord.

    fosforus ,

    Reasons.

    fosforus ,

I can assure you that I would be the jerk if I explained my reasons as well.

    fosforus ,

    Excellent reasons.

    fosforus ,

I believe that many people don’t even know that using Discord is problematic. So just saying that it shouldn’t be used can be enough to – in combination of other messages they may get – make a difference. Being a jerk is not the goal, obviously, but nor is me being seen as a jerk important at all.

You might say that my jerkness prevents people from believing me. But it seems to me from looking at the behavior of activists and their tactics that nobody cares about that.

    www.prospera.co

The video was obviously a bit pro, given the source (Reason), so I thought this place should offer a nice counterview into this thing.

    fosforus OP , (edited )

Fuuuuck, you might be right. pac.hn/…/Prospera-Legal-Code-TOC-v11.10-Compresse…

§ 701. Sexual Intercourse with Minor Female Child One other than her husband who, without her parent’s consent, has sexual intercourse with a minor female child Is subject to liability to (a) the parent who is entitled to the child’s services for any resulting loss of services or ability to render services, and to (b) the parent who is under a legal duty to furnish medical treatment for expenses reasonably incurred or likely to be Incurred for medical treatment during the child’s minority.

§ 702. Consent of Parent The consent of the parent to sexual intercourse between his minor daughter and another, or conduct on his part which shows a willingness that his daughter has sexual relations with the other, bars him from recovery for the Intercourse.

Wow. Other sources say that Honduras has had the worst problem with child marriages of all of Central America. Perhaps linked to this somehow.

    fosforus OP ,

It’s not. I was hoping the commenters to this thread would help with that.

    fosforus OP ,

I feel like these two things are not comparable at all.

    fosforus ,

I listen to all kinds of freaks that would probably disqualify me in the eyes of >50% of women. The other day I listened through the whole episode where Coleman Hughes talked with Scott Adams. But even I stay away from Joe fucking Rogan. The man is just completely empty. There’s nothing there, not even morbid amusement. If I want to listen to nothing, there are far better sounding options.

    fosforus ,

    What do you mean, “but”?

Star Trek and The Orville, which is better/worse?

I asked this question sometime ago on The Orville’s subreddit, and surprisingly got mixed responses. I assume most here however, are going to prefer Star Trek, specifically TNG that its aping from. For the record I do prefer TNG as well, but rewatching The Orville, after you get past its kinda sucky first season, I really...

Bernie Sanders Champions 32-Hour Work Week With No Loss in Pay ( www.commondreams.org )

As part of his Labor Day message to workers in the United States, Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday re-upped his call for the establishment of a 20% cut to the workweek with no loss in pay—an idea he said is “not radical” given the enormous productivity gains over recent decades that have resulted in massive profits for...

    fosforus ,

So he calls essentially for a 25% raise across the board for everybody. In some fields this doesn’t matter much. Office workers will probably achieve just as much or in some cases perhaps more in 32 hours than in 40 hours. Some other fields, perhaps less so.

If this would happen, it would directly lead to increased unemployment in some fields, and probably and increased inflation that might eat the benefit anyway in the end.

Still, even if I’m a bit skeptical, I’m all for lessening the hours we work, and all for spreading the productivity to more people and not just the top. I just think that the workers will need to take at least part of the hit to make this a realistic goal.

    fosforus ,

You’re getting down voted for expressing legitimate concerns, and nobody is giving reasons why they disagree with you. I thought we left this kind of interaction behind with reddit.
