For the driver, that makes sense I guess. You’re supposed to have your driver’s license if you’re driving. Seems like they should be able to look that up, but whatever. Does this apply to passengers too though?

I thought that it was already a legal requirement to provide identification to law enforcement, upon request.

Have I have been wrong for most of my life, or is this a regional thing?

Varies from state to state. Possibly municipality to municipality. In my area I always assumed this was already the case

It’s a criminal offense now, so if the officer is having a bad day you get to spend the night in jail. Max fine of $500

I thought I was crazy. I can’t think of a scenario anywhere in the US where you get pulled over without your license and it turns out OK
