furrowsofar , to U.S. News in Texas is replacing thousands of human exam graders with AI

I wonder to what sort of standard. I know I was shocked how poor things were when I started grading college students work as a TA. Same later in the work world reviewing nominations for an award.

I think what I use to use was an IR spotlight in a portable spotlight fixture that had a clamp you could clamp about anywhere. Also make certain you have enough ventilation.

Work space. I have a small collapsable bench and two jaw stands with a couple of 2x4s I use in my garage for my work surface. It all collapses when not in use. Love those jaw stands. Inherited the little bench and it works great too and is more stable. I tend to use the bench as my work area and the stands as supports but for quick jobs I will just use the stands.

I remember when I was young I use to use IR lamps in the winter when curing paint on my car. You do have to get the placement correct to get the best surface temperature.

Just a couple of ideas.

furrowsofar , (edited ) to U.S. News in Biden Is Bankrolling Israel’s War Amid Growing Financial Hardship at Home

Frankly do not agree with your assessment especially about Ukraine. Russia still retains maximal aims. Ukraine still retains the ability to militarily defeat Russia but the west has been a day late and a dollar short. Manpower. That is a Ukranian political decision. Ukrainian losses have been not that large compared to their population. Similar in ratio to Russian losses to their population.

Gaza is harder. No good solution. The residents of Gaza choose this by choosing Hamas as their government and starting a war with Israel. Iran is similarly responsible.

Edit: The amount of money the US has put into either conflicts is minimal, had been spend largely in the US, and has no relation to social funding.

furrowsofar , to U.S. News in IRS Collected Half a Billion Dollars in Back Taxes From Delinquent Millionaires in 2023, Sentencing Some to Prison

It is also much harder to go after billionaires. They can hide things better and also litigate better. I feel like certain people do not want to fund the IRS is the tax cheat lobby.

furrowsofar , (edited ) to U.S. News in IRS Collected Half a Billion Dollars in Back Taxes From Delinquent Millionaires in 2023, Sentencing Some to Prison

Inflation has made millionaire middle class. Go after the billionaires please or at least 10 or 100 million level.

Pretty much anyone that can afford to retire is a millionaire these days especially if you include pension and social security values and all their other assets.

furrowsofar , to U.S. News in Uvalde school massacre could have been stopped sooner, DOJ report finds | CNN

What it makes me think about is how much of the police in Uvalde was theater. They supposedly had training and even a SWAT team. There is a real difference between on paper and in reality.

furrowsofar , to U.S. News in Clarence Thomas’ Private Complaints About Money Sparked Fears He Would Resign

The court pays over twice median household income for Washington DC. So he should have no problem affording to live there. On the other hand their pay is a bit low for what the job is. Inflation adjusted pay for the court has kind trended between 2x and 4x of current median household income so at a little above 2x it is on the lower end of historical. Perhaps a pay increase to 3x median income is reasonable.

furrowsofar , to U.S. News in Maine voters don't like their electric utilities, but they balked at paying billions to buy them out

Lot of people have their own generators now just because it is not that reliable. Use to be but not now since is was bought out by some Spanish company a few decades ago.

furrowsofar , to U.S. News in America's nonreligious are a growing, diverse phenomenon. They really don't like organized religion

Organized religion has same issues as most human organizations. Organizations tend to develop a life if their own and do not always serve their customers or other stakeholders and can do things that are counter productive. They also can develop a internal power structure run by people seeking their own ends.

furrowsofar , to Fediverse in Beehaw on Lemmy: The long-term conundrum of staying here

This I think. Every platform that is not just a mess needs moderation. There are things you just cannot allow especially in a platform that is suppose to be a safe space or at least not a total shit fest. Some of this is the law too, CSAM for example or copyrighted material. The rest is just about not putting up with trolls. When lemmy was 1000 users total this problem is a lot different then 1 million to 10 million or 100 million. It is just that Behaw is a bit more particular on one hand and probably more of a target on the other.

furrowsofar , to Do It Yourself in How can I build a custom sound generator?

Historically there were sound generator chips like: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Instruments_SN76477 . Not sure if these are even made any more. Again the sounds were crude.

furrowsofar , (edited ) to Do It Yourself in How can I build a custom sound generator?

OK. So I think you have your answer. Case, board, battery, timer circuit, tone generator. Look these up on the web. Lot of them will be based on the 555 timer chip. A common electronics store is Jameco and Newark. There are other sound chips too but I am not familiar with the numbers. Simple oscillators do not actually need an IC, could probably just be discrete. Keep in mind to electronics do have temperature ranges, performance of whatever you design will have to be tested at different temperatures.

More realistic sounds, I think that gets harder fast. To do that you’d have to in the end record sounds into a PROM and read it out though a DtoA. Or use an SBC and program it.

furrowsofar , (edited ) to Do It Yourself in How can I build a custom sound generator?

Keep in mind z-wave and zigbee devices can be low power. Plus they form a mesh network so can have fairly large total area. The controller though might not be that low power.

Dogs … they may be leaving based in small not sound. Also sound… the higher energy part of that is the actual speaker. Other the thing to think about too. Ultrasound beyond human hearing. Dogs do not like.

The other question is how do you plan on triggering the sound. That seems a bit more complex unless it is just timer based or you pushing a button.

furrowsofar , (edited ) to Do It Yourself in How can I build a custom sound generator?

Power supply, speaker, case, and however you want to trigger, generate, and terminate the sound. For simple sound, and oscillator circuit and specific logic. More complex they use to sell sound chips. These days you could use a raspberry pi or even an old cell phone and program it. There is probably even off the shelf stuff you could link with Wi-Fi, z-wave, or zigbee these days.
