That idea was actually explored in Drain the Oceans: Part II, on the xkcd website. I hope Randall makes a video version of that as well.

Relevant scene, for those out-of-the-loop: https://youtu.be/ypEaGQb6dJk&t=362

Guess what, dogs and cats derive play behaviors from predation too, doesn’t mean that play ain’t play.

Humans also derive play behaviour from foraging and predation. Play is play, and everyone can have fun, no matter the species.

I mean, is it that different than us when we sleep?

threelonmusketeers ,

Interesting polypeptide tattoo. Anyone recognize it?

threelonmusketeers OP ,

Yeah, I love Randall’s old blog. Super happy that they’re getting remastered in video form with narration by the man himself.

threelonmusketeers OP ,

Yeah, that’s him. He’s listed in the credits:

Narrated by and based on “What If” by Randall Monroe

I would never have shared it if it were just some random person freebooting his content.

You do make a good point about the footnotes and mouseover text. I wonder if there would be some way to weave them into the videos. Perhaps inserting them as a single fleeting frames? It’s a shame YouTube got rid of annotations, as the “hidden annotations” seem like they’d be a perfect fit for this.

How many naps could a kid nap if a napping kid was kidnapped with a napkin?

threelonmusketeers ,

Is this a reference to the tongue twister “I slit the sheet, the sheet I slit, and on the slitted sheet I sit”?

threelonmusketeers OP ,

NASA haven’t launched them yet, have they? Last I heard they were sitting in storage.

Those time lapse animations are super cool!

Here’s the explain xkcd, just in case you need an explanation of the explanation of the punchline.

threelonmusketeers ,

Where does Rankine line up with Celsius?

threelonmusketeers ,

Space was definitely a thing, it was just closer together than it is now.

threelonmusketeers ,

Huh, so the lines do cross, just at a pysically impossible temperature of -614.5875. Neat!

threelonmusketeers ,

I wonder what fraction of xkcd readers have already seen this video… I imagine it is quite high. I know I’ve watched it multiple times. It’s a good one.

threelonmusketeers ,

I think explainxkcd is unofficial and crowdsourced?

threelonmusketeers ,

I love the variety of places explainxkcd editors find to slip in a “citation needed”.

threelonmusketeers ,

Are you kidding? Half the fun of Randall’s comics is learning something new from them!

Is the “tardi” in “tardi-pepper” derived from “tardigrade”?

threelonmusketeers ,

twenty sides?

No, dodecahedra have 12 sides. You’re thinking of icosahedra.
