The jbod idea sounds good to explore further, as it tha home server and storage would be separated. However it would add an additional device to the power bill.
However i don’t need the full amount of all disks at all times. If i’d want to unplug via shell script, i’d need to plug it manually in person back in for storing things. I actually do not need it running all the time, as the home server ssd can cache most of what i need recently in access. The jbod is then more an archive.
i’m mainly looking for a way to power down the inexpensive hdd’s. I could use the raspberry pi as the jbod controller, but it does not properly support wake on lan, so thats also not an option
Might not be a good deal, usally HP Mini or Dell units have better prices and better specs. You can get those for 100$ with decently modern CPUs, USB 3.0 , USB-C etc. You can find mode models with dual NVME slots, other with 1 NVME + 1 SATA that might be enough for the OP’s use case.
Can you recommend some devices? Most of the ones i saw had good prices, but not performance relative to power usage. The N100 with its 4 efficiency cores is actually quite good for the price and power usage. Unfortunately most mini pcs with it have limited ports.
I also think, that 2 ssds might be sufficient for the beginning. I’m even thinking of just adding 2 external ssd’s and call it a day for the beginning (one as backup), but that does not scale well.
Im using a couple HP T730 thin clients. It has a 4 core ryzen cpu, up to 32gb RAM, and a PCIE x4 port (physical x8). One of them is my firewall, with pfsense and a 4 port i310 gigabit ethernet card. The other is a work-in-progress NAS. I’ve got a 8 port SATA/SAS card and I’m planning on printing a HDD enclosure with my 3d printer.
I haven’t measured the actual power consumption, but I’ve seen claims of 10-20W.

I typically re-read the LOTR, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion once a year. Well, The Silmarillion is once every two years because, whew, it is a dense one.
Wow, that's a lot of rereading. Me and some friends do a LOTR watch party every year, making food and eating food as they eat it in the movies. But reading the books every year, that's quite a feat!
First season set in 2164. Episodes include depicting the events I linked. Second season in 2165, same deal, depict all these events plus whatever new stuff the writers dream up. By filling in existing canon, half the seasons stories become really easy to break, saving time and money, and people who respect canon will have nothing to complain about. Ten year time jump explains why the actors look older. The only problem is no Trip, but he can easily cameo in a dream story or an alternate timeline, heck they could even Harry Kim him back to life.

I re-read books frequently. But then, I am a fast and voracious reader. I’ve recently been trimming down my library from around 7000 books due to an upcoming move, and there’s a hardcore of about 2000 I’m unwilling to get rid of because they’re either reference materials or old friends I expect to re-read before I die. There are some things (LOTR, much Heinlein, Oz books, Alice in Wonderland…) that I’ve read a dozen times or more.
I do re-read some non-fiction, mainly history. But most of my well-worn books are fiction.
I largely quite like SNW, but this episode had some extremely questionable eugenics apologia laced into the narrative.
I think the broadest problem with nu-trek (though it’s strongly reined in in SNW) is the heavily maudlin over-scoring and the bathos-laden dialogue. When almost every exchange between two characters sounds “perfectly written” and is dripping in score, it’s hard to take seriously.
If SNW employed like, 20% more restraint in that regard, it would sing.
Usually in these kind of situations I fall back to sharing a OneDrive / Teams (SharePoint) folder out to the external vendor. Anyone can say that they can’t receive the encrypted email and there could be legitimately good reasons for that, but if they don’t know how to login to 365 to access a shared folder that’s on them.
If they absolutely refuse to allow you to share or email an individual vs. a distro group then I’d do it that way, but not using an “anyone with the link” share depending on the sensitivity of the information. If it’s something that isn’t as sensitive sure, but otherwise they’ll need to setup credentials with that distro group and use it to login to access the shared folder.

edit: seems like the only active mod on ShittyDaystrom on Reddit has ran a script to edit all their old comments, and Reddit suspended them for it. The sub on Reddit appears to be running fine with no mods. I think it would be a fine candidate for creating a community here, the people in the Reddit sub are happily shitposting Star Trek memes with no active mods at all. If someone who is not a terrible mod, like myself, would like to take it on, I seriously doubt it will be much work.
There are some huge fans of shittydaystrom on the team here, we’ll definitely be hosting a community for that eventually. For the moment, we’re worried about fracturing users by creating too many different communities.

For an episode whose argument hinged on genetic engineering being a cultural practice for the Ilyrians it is strange they never actually had anybody testify as to what significance it has in Ilyrian culture. Or how it is done and why.
If the genetic engineering is done to adapt to their inhospitable atmosphere why are they doing it to every child? They could just edit the germline once and be done with it.
Altogether it felt like the writers just got very attached to the idea of genetically modified individuals as a metaphor for real world marginalized groups that they lost track both of the in-universe practicalities of the metaphor and the real world implications for the metaphor. This was just outright sympathetic to eugenicists, an ideology that has led to the deaths of millions of marginalized people.
@varda@ValueSubtracted Maybe I missed something but I thought the Ilyrians were all about augmentation, both genetic and technological. I think there’s a huge difference between taking something, making it better and the pursuit of a perfect race. I too would like to know more.

I’d start looking just to see what options are out there even if you don’t end up deciding to leave. You could start investing the amount that you’re missing from the match so that you don’t miss out on compounding growth, but it’s certainly a pay cut however you look at it and if it’s already been 6 months I don’t trust that it’ll be temporary.

There is such a huge difference in the masses of the earth and moon that although the moon is slowing the rotation of the earth, the earth’s rotation is also speeding up the moon’s orbit. The faster orbit is causing the moon to move farther away from the earth.
I definitely agree. Back in school I learned that a Newbury medal in a book meant that a dog and/or parental figure will die. I feel like it's easier to make people feel something when the feeling is bad. Also joyful things are sometimes thought to be lesser or simple.

I got myself onto the city library system’s e-book app specifically to read Becky Chambers (city closed our local branch so getting and returning physical books is difficult for me). There is no Becky Chambers on that app, nor anything else I searched for. Which is how I ended up with the one I found such a depressing slog.
Not sure it really is easier to make people feel something good. Live music can really do that. Comedic opera thrives on it. Chinese and Korean dramas can dive deep into grief but also soar with joy.
Perhaps it’s more that when we’ve put unnecessarily put ourselves through something difficult, we’re inclined to justify it by according it more significance? Not sure, thinking out loud here.
