Martin “Didn’t stop you from being on radio, did it?”

Niles “Yes Frasier, perhaps your dalliance with the glamour of the airwaves sent the wrong message about a career in the sciences.”

Frasier paces around the room in distress

Frasier “I have not spent decades of my life fostering a love of knowledge in my son just so he can –“

007ace , in What's your Frasier hot take?

Love the show. Not a fan of the sequel. But I can run through the original. Niles and Daphne were a great match, and they got together without making either character less for it.

Best show ever. Even the new series was pretty amazing even if only because I got more Frasier lol.

Bryony87 OP Mod ,

Yeah it wasn’t quite the magic of the original but it was still more Frasier and that’s always good in my book!

KingJalopy ,

Agreed. Any Frasier is better than none!

captainjaneway Mod , in Will we get a season 2 of the Frasier reboot?
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

As per usual, this reboot lost the soul of the show. I could still laugh at it, but the show runners have no idea what made it successful.

  1. Not enough heartfelt moments. Cheap laughs are what killed the vibe for me. Frasier has some episodes that pull at my heart strings emotionally. You gotta have good drama to have good comedy, in my opinion.
  2. Frasier is dressed so weird. He looks like he’s trying to dress down? That’s not his style. He’d be dressed to the nine as usual. In Harvard, that shouldn’t be too unusual.
  3. Jokes were paid off too quickly. Frasier would often give a joke quite a while before it was paid off.
  4. Characters were simply unrealistic. Niles was goofy at times, but he had self-respect and all the arrogance of Frasier. But Niles’ son acts ten years younger than he actually is. I just didn’t believe most characters.
  5. Set design was not great. Frasier’s home having the Rorschach wallpaper? That feels like a joke. It doesn’t seem authentic. Again, Frasier is not a “modern” man. If anything, his home should look much more like a cigar lounge than a '“contemporary” home with shrink elements. I was also disappointed by how often the set was statically shot. They did not utilize many angles. I liked the bar well enough.

Overall, I thought the show had merit on its own. But it was a poor sequel for Frasier. It was funny at times. Some moments the show did come through. The final episode was actually pretty damn close to the original thing. I loved some of the bits with the trees, the goose, Roz, and how his son surprised him. I just felt like they missed the mark on too many other episodes.

I also wish more studios would stop lighting everything so heavily. A bit of nuance in your shots isn’t such a bad thing. Every shot looks like plastic to me. It’s sort of a modern film approach. Maybe I’m a rusty bucket, but it feels uninspired to me.

JustAManOnAToilet , in I can't think of some good text for this meme, but the format seemed ripe for the picking. Maybe someone far more clever can make use of it

He would walk into a bar, snap his fingers, and half the patrons would disappear so he could have their drinks.

g1bber1sh , in Meaningful Character Names

I think David was named in the original series after David Angell, who perished in the 9/11 attack along with his wife.

ptz OP ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Possibly, yeah. They did honor Angell in a closing title card during the original airing. I guess it could be both. :shrug:

KingJalopy ,

Well they had named the kid David before the original series even ended if I’m not mistaken.

All I remember is Roz picking the name Ichabod on the form when they were pre-registering him for the boujie school before he was born. lol.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

And Niles worrying about the dreaded glottal stop if they named him Jack Crane.

JustAManOnAToilet , in Mega thread for Reboot Episodes 1&2

I’m kinda hoping Eve stumbles upon Frasier’s massive collection of his radio show tapes that she then uses to put her baby to sleep.

Absolutely loved the show in my youth. I don’t feel motivated to watch this though.
