It is still possible to gather HDTV from over-the-air. A hundred-odd bucks worth of antenna and digitization gizmo, and you discover the OTA TV is just MPEG files that a 8W, 100mm square box can put them on your home network, and store them on any PC.
I do that with local programming, a couple of national shows, and I have a few streaming.
