@arstechnica Microsoft is the new IBM.

Back in the day, there were many technically superior option to IBM for computing, but because IBM had that brand recognition, companies got their cheque book out for them and not the opposition.

When IBM came to Microsoft, the latter's only OS offering was a Unix variant called Xenix. Ironically, had they been better sales people, they'd have sold IBM a slimmed down Xenix that booted into single-user mode rather than buying QDOS and selling it as MS-DOS… but there you go.

It took IBM a couple of decades of missteps to fall from their lofty perch, Microsoft's time will come.
