I'm not saying we shouldn't worry about how China might be using TikTok to steal our data and manipulate us...

But why aren't we at least as worried about the U.S. billionaires who own the other apps stealing our data and trying to manipulate us?

gooba42 ,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich The global oligarchy wants us all distracted with "patriotism" and xenophobia. This is how they maintain control of their various fiefs.

The assault on TikTok isn't about national security as much as it's about a turf war between oligarchs. American disinfo merchants want to maintain their relatively secure monopoly on Americans.

@rbreich I'm more worried about the US billionaires who own the Supreme Court and right wing politicians. Not thrilled to see Harlan Crowe as a major donor to the Larry Hogan campaign. And stupid MD Democrats will vote for him.

@rbreich

Wait.. so.. you mean to say that everyone who was screaming about Twitter and Facebook four years ago weren't worried about how those two entities were manipulating the elections?

@rbreich

because china isn't providing cushy jobs, all-expenses-paid vacations, and bribes... sorry, 'campaign contributions' and 'book sales' - to our members of congress, silly.

hopeforall ,

@rbreich because they sell it to the US government. Privacy died a long time ago online.

@rbreich I agree but one, U.S. corporations are doing it to fleece us, make us a product to be sold. The Chinese? Bring our democracy like the Republicans are trying to do; to make their vision of America. Also, from what I have read, the DOJ and NSA briefed our legislators and made a huge impression on both parties. Perhaps they know something we don’t? I can’t imagine what else would make this administration challenge first amendment rights.

patrickleavy ,
@patrickleavy@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich totally. Maybe if they're demanding Bytedance sell TikTok, then should sell Facebook?

justanotherinternetguy ,
@justanotherinternetguy@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich
In reality, we should be worrying about both. It's unfortunate that the US media portrays the Chinese as villains and tries to spin the narrative that it's only the Chinese that are here to manipulate us.

amvanatta ,
@amvanatta@mstdn.social avatar

@rbreich because if Amazon/Google/Meta can’t sell our data to their number one client, China, it ruins their market share.

paradigma ,
@paradigma@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich Well, that's good business, isn't it. Sadly war too. Some people are manufacturing consent since a few centuries. Profit? driven world (Zeitgeist) manufactured throughout manipulation of masses.

It is time to take a look to the big picture and sustain the panorama. What happened here is just a symptom of curable disease.

Greetings!

MoOhaMadugu ,
@MoOhaMadugu@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich Are they really stealing our data or are you just simply insecure?

fraying ,
@fraying@xoxo.zone avatar

@rbreich And why aren’t we making it illegal for those US-based sites to sell that data?

timo21 ,
@timo21@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@rbreich this TikTok move is not about our civilian data. All of our data is already out there. Everyone that wants our data can already get it. This is about government data. Similar to the recent Chinese malware on routers bought from China. That said, selling TikTok to the billionaire cabal is not an improvement. Out of the frying pan, into the fire. I think the billionaires are pissy there's something they don't control.

It's either all for show, or because the nsa is complaining that they can't access all that juicy data if it's in China....

rato ,

@rbreich

What's even funnier is that they make fat bucks by selling our data to the Chinese to spy on us.

MisterMoo ,
@MisterMoo@mastodon.online avatar

@rbreich These arguments are typically used to distract from the fact that TikTok is a propaganda factory in waiting (and possibly it's not even waiting), subject to direct and immediate control of the Chinese government at a moment's notice if they want to do that. There's no due process in that country, nothing that would stop the General Secretary from snapping up the data tomorrow. So, I could do with a big all-encompassing privacy bill, sure, but let's ditch the whataboutism.
