@arstechnica I don’t know, that Abbott guy really seems to understand science. Really smart governor and not a piece of shit or anything, this is probably overblown.

Really intelligent that they knew the cows were sick , the milk discolored and they gave it to the cats anyway.

Maybe the fact that adult cats are lactose intolerant makes them more susceptible to the take-up of H5N1.

Yes, cats will drink milk. But that doesn't mean that it's good for them.

That would also hold out hope for those people who we know will stubbornly insist on drinking raw milk.

Leana Wen: I'm not worried. My kids are going to start drinking raw milk and play with some H5N1 infected cars to boost their immune systems! 🤪

@arstechnica It's been widely reported at other affected dairies as well. This virus is absolutely lethal in cats. Half of 24 farm cats at the one dairy where they took samples died.

It is concerning that the H5N1 has spread to multiple herds of cattle around several states in a few weeks.

The really worrying part of this story is how it spread from the cattle to the cats in about a week killing 50% of the poor things.

Several dairy workers also appear to have caught it too. At this rate of spread and across mammals it could make the COVID outbreak look tame.

Time to start stockpiling again?

I saw that.
Three barn cats?

Aside from the zoological disease aspect, that’s such a shame.
I’ve always loved barn kitties.
