So i've been hoping onto the Random Magazines I find the look of on Kbin but a lot of them seem to be empty and made over a month ago, Why is this?

readbeanicecream ,
@readbeanicecream@kbin.social avatar

@SamXavia There was a "mag grab" or "magazine rush" during the great redxit of 2023. Lots of users came in to grab some big names there were red-equivalent. There have been a few requests to delete these mags so active users can take them over.

When I visit the page of a or user/community through a direct link or entering the url (as opposed to navigating to it manually on mastodon), I get taken to the kbin/lemmy instance instead. How can I prevent that?

BloodSlut ,

You can’t. When you go to a different website you’re going to a different website.

That said, there was a recent post about a Firefox add-on that would redirect you to that post on your home instance if you happened to click or enter a URL. I don’t have that post saved so you may have to search for it.

Pamasich OP ,

@BloodSlut

I think you misunderstand what I meant.

This link: https://mastodon.social/@[email protected]

takes me to the profile on kbin instead.

This happens with any kbin/lemmy community/user. Mastodon seems to automatically redirect, I'm asking if I can turn that off somehow. If I go to a mastodon.social url, I expect to arrive at mastodon.social not kbin.social or lemmy.world.

As I understand it, that addon you're referring to would just redirect a lemmy.world link to kbin.social (aka my home instance) instead. Which isn't really what I'm looking for at all.

Threads vs microblogs?

Does anyone have any advice on whether to use or when you're looking to say, start a discussion about a topic on ? Is there an etiquette for what option is best? Or do people just pick depending on their mood (having a Twitter vs a Reddit sort of a day)?

WonkoTheSane ,

A thread is a Reddit equivalent and a microblog is a Twitter equivalent. So it really depends if you’re trying to start a discussion or just want to put something out there in my opinion

SzethFriendOfNimi ,

It can definitely be confusing. And kbin’s naming convention is confusing too.

Holyginz ,

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know there were board games that could be played solo.

@Holyginz That's why we exist, to spread the word!

How to subscribe to magazines on a different instance.

Another user posted this in a thread with his blessing I am sharing it as it helps for people new to the fediverse

You go and browse the instance you want first. You don't have to create an account there, you can view everything, just can't post of comment without an account obviously.

Then, you look at the name of the community you want, in the form of /!something/ or it could be /@lemmy.world/ too.

You come back to kbin and type or paste that into the search bar without the exclamation mark but with an @ sign instead. so /!something/ sould be typed as /@something/ into kbin's search bar. The option to subscribe will appear in the search result.

You can use the same technique on mastodon to subscribe to kbin and lemmy accounts (and communities because technically they are accounts too). Just type or paste the /@something/ into the mastodon search bar.

Hey, thanks for this! I'd just like to add, for new users who may have still been confused by this from other fediverse sites (though it was super helpful and got me set on the right path!) If it's something from beehaw.org, such as

https://beehaw.org/c/[email protected]

then it's simply removing the

https://beehaw.org/c/

and replacing that with the @ like you mentioned!

Why does my subscribed feed contain posts from communities I'm not subscribed to?

HipPriest , to /kbin

I sometimes have this thing where I create a post but it keeps showing under Microblog instead of Threads.

I'm creating things by pressing the '+' sign in the top right and clicking add new post.

What is the Microblog, and what do I need to do just to start a normal thread on a topic?

Hope someone can help!
