“And so, after the Great Factory Atrocity committed against the workers by the Billionaire Grey Shirt Army, all Grey Shirts were forced to flee to their luxury orbitals. Thus the curse ‘may he launch himself into orbit and never come back’ entered the common vernacular, often accompanied by the ceremonial breaking of an orbital landing beacon, many of which had been found in a large cache of Grey Shirt supplies buried on Oahu.”

I took out one of my most egregious private student loans in the early 2000s for about $30,000. The interest rate is variable, so it goes up regularly. I’ve been paying the minimum (now $475, my largest bill after rent) on time every month since I graduated, and my balance is currently about $32,000. Oh and that’s just one of my many student loans.
There is literally no way out, I’m completely trapped.
Fortunately most of my other loans are federal, so they’re slightly less shitty, though not by much. At least those will eventually be forgiven once I’m too old to care.
All the double negatives make the headline a challenge to parse, but they are against the legislation because it would make it illegal for local authorities to implement basic safeguards for people who work outside. They want the safeguards.
The legislation, known as House Bill 433, forbids local authorities from mandating that employers provide their employees with, for example, water breaks or advance notice of their work hours.
I started reading it, but the very first paragraph is already spilling over with bullshit. So I’m done.
Israel’s unpreparedness on Oct. 7 shows that even powerful nations can be surprised in catastrophic ways.
First of all, of course powerful nations can be surprised, what a silly thing to say. But that’s not what happened here. Israel should have been fully prepared, because Israel was warned about the exact thing that happened on Oct. 7th. Their intelligence was quite specific on what was about to happen, it’s just that they didn’t believe their own intelligence for what I would call ironically racist reasons. They didn’t believe that Hamas was organized enough to be capable of carrying out such an attack, but they were so obviously wrong.
So without finishing the article I’m gonna guess these clowns are using an intelligence failure to justify more intelligence.
Yeah this is how I’d handle it, simple and to the point. As a bonus I might add “I’ll let you know if I need a hand” which takes the impetus away from her so she knows her ideas are unwanted, but stays professional and polite.
That tracks. My last two enterprise laptops had USB-C powered docks. The first one had problems since the first time I plugged in that ridiculous double plug for the dock. My current one is basically new and is already an unstable mess.
His trip to Argentina during the 1978 World Cup leaves no doubt regarding his support for these dictatorships,” said Miriam Lewin, a survivor of the ESMA death camp that was close by the River stadium where Kissinger attended matches. “I could hear the cheering when goals were scored, from inside the concentration camp.”
This makes me nauseous, especially because I personally understand the generational trauma of concentration camps, forced labor, and mass killing. Of all people, he should have too.
“I don’t see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people,” he said. “The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves.”
Ah that’s good context, thanks. It seems like it’s mostly a positive, since it would give labor even more leverage to improve the contracts that haven’t been negotiated yet. I’m just happy that progress is being made at all. The longer this goes, the more the studios’ reputation will suffer. I hope the public says strong with their support if this deal falls through for some reason.
This is such good news! I wonder if the incredibly effective and creative UAW strikes made them realize they were fucked if they didn’t get reasonable. The public is squarely on the side of the workers, in all the different labor actions going on right now. When this many different industries say enough is enough and take a stand, it’s hard to ignore who has the real power.
What the fuck is this? “How employers might help change that” Answer: they wont, they just might be forced to let employees give themselves a fee-free loan from their own retirement account, oh and here’s a slightly different new emergency savings account. It’s still all just your money…What the actual fuck?
What about the half of US workers that don’t have a retirement account? I guess fuck them?
With the payment pause, student debt has effectively been cancelled for the last three years (and would you look at that, the world didn’t end…), so I’m very curious to find out how the economy will be impacted by millions of borrowers having their payments resume without relief (thanks SCOTUS!). My financial situation will go from “meh I’m in okay shape” to “I can’t afford anything anymore” overnight, so I won’t be participating in the economy nearly as much as I have been for the last three years.
