I took out one of my most egregious private student loans in the early 2000s for about $30,000. The interest rate is variable, so it goes up regularly. I’ve been paying the minimum (now $475, my largest bill after rent) on time every month since I graduated, and my balance is currently about $32,000. Oh and that’s just one of my many student loans.
There is literally no way out, I’m completely trapped.
Fortunately most of my other loans are federal, so they’re slightly less shitty, though not by much. At least those will eventually be forgiven once I’m too old to care.
All the double negatives make the headline a challenge to parse, but they are against the legislation because it would make it illegal for local authorities to implement basic safeguards for people who work outside. They want the safeguards.

Yeah this is how I’d handle it, simple and to the point. As a bonus I might add “I’ll let you know if I need a hand” which takes the impetus away from her so she knows her ideas are unwanted, but stays professional and polite.

This is such good news! I wonder if the incredibly effective and creative UAW strikes made them realize they were fucked if they didn’t get reasonable. Ah that’s good context, thanks. It seems like it’s mostly a positive, since it would give labor even more leverage to improve the contracts that haven’t been negotiated yet. I’m just happy that progress is being made at all. The longer this goes, the more the studios’ reputation will suffer. I hope the public says strong with their support if this deal falls through for some reason.

With the payment pause, student debt has effectively been cancelled for the last three years (and would you look at that, the world didn’t end…), so I’m very curious to find out how the economy will be impacted by millions of borrowers having their payments resume without relief (thanks SCOTUS!). My financial situation will go from “meh I’m in okay shape” to “I can’t afford anything anymore” overnight, so I won’t be participating in the economy nearly as much as I have been for the last three years.
