I don't see how this works in the long run, if they have to put paid corporate drones in charge of moderation. Wasn't the entire point of Reddit that they don't have to pay moderators?

This kind of strategy is lose / lose. If spez want an IPO, well this kind of crap is tanking that IPO.

Definitely true. It's kind of like any physically intensive job that you can only keep up for so long before your body gets messed up to the point where you have to quit early. That "big money" isn't forever, it has to be saved up while it's earned for retirement later, which might be sooner rather than later due to physical disability.

Plus there's the lack of holidays, and in fact crazier work hours with fewer breaks and no days off during the holidays, because that's when there's the most shipping going on. Much harder than coding or other tech work in air conditioned rooms and breaks during holidays, etc.

It's true. It's why I feel that Mastodon will never replace Twitter. It's too much of a left wing circlejerk / bubble, and they're actively hostile to even moderate viewpoints. much less actually conservative ones.

I'm probably in the minority in this, but I believe that even people I don't agree with should have a platform and be tolerated as long as they're reasonable and willing to compromise and show respect, as long as they're not racist nazi nutjobs.

The world isn't exclusively made up of one set of ideas, and you shouldn't shut out 75% of all viewpoints just because they don't agree with yours, imo.

The only bit of good news is that young Republicans believe in climate change. Now I really wish they'd speak out more and start moving their party in that direction.

The GOP needs to die and be replaced with a better conservative party. What the old GOP (circa Eisenhower or so) was is what conservative Democrats are now. At the very least, we need ranked choice voting and a third party who'll take votes from the GOP by being similar in regard to most things EXCEPT action on climate change.

I know that's not ideal, but politics is about the art of the possible and choosing the least bad outcome. I'd rather have gun nuts / anti-abortion hounds / homophobes that care about the planet and perhaps support unions or something than what we have now. What we have now is people that are against everything good for the planet and its people.

What is Reddit CEO Steve Huffman doing? ( www.theverge.com )

One of the weirder phenomena of the low interest rate era in tech was a tendency to see companies primarily as investments. The goal was not to have a functional business, but an exit, often via IPO or acquisition. I have begun to wonder if that explains what Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has been up to lately....

Given how much of a douche he's being (and only because he has organizational power, and not because he has people skills) in the event of a disaster, he'd probably be one of the ones to bite it first, or to be sent on an mission for expendables, to be honest.

When you can't just wave around money or org chart power to solve your problems, then people will start showing how they really feel about you. The way he's running Reddit into the ground shows that he's not a good leader, and the way he's pissing everyone off right now by following in the footsteps of a huge failure (Musk) who's also a jerk is just proving that he's an idiot AND a douche that wouldn't do well if society went awry.

That's why I deleted my actual Facebook account, it really did give me the impression that the company was Cyberstalking me. They knew stuff I did not tell them or put down anywhere in any of the data forms they gave me to fill out. I didn't upload any pictures, I barely did much of anything, yet somehow they seemed to know everything about me anyway.

I eventually made a new "account" a few years later and left it completely blank and filled out nothing but my name... and yet they still guessed quite a few things correctly, including who I knew in real life. So damn creepy. I only use that new account for log in synchronization for games and apps that don't have any other means of access. I wish I could get rid of it too, but it's a necessary evil for certain edge cases.
