Hey folks, I have a couple things I would like some advice on. Currently for my home network setup I have my ISP’s modem/router combo set to bridge port 1, and then some google wifi and points connected to that....
But to be fair, even 2 ASUS WiFi 6E on their zenwifi like for example are like >300€. A Cloud gateway ultra + U7 pro + PoE injector is around that too. For me the router/AP entrance is in a place that barely gives a signal so it makes so sense to have an access point there.
So I would get more or less the same signal with 1 access point + a wired router than 2 access points.
My simple itx 2700X server with 2 HDDs was idling significantly less than 55W that his synology was and it isn't even have low idle power consumption like the synology.
Definitely something off with his method or configuration.
For the casual selfhoster, The Node 304 is hard to beat. Great cooling potential (U14S) with a 140mm exhaust, ATX power supply, 6 3.5" + 2 SSDs, and GPU all in <20L. I can literally sneak my server in anywhere!
Yeah that is quite a few drives! But then you are reaching datahoarder levels.
I have been selfhosting for 3 years now and I am still on my first mirrored 4TB drive set 😅 I will get an 8 or 10 next and probably be set for like 10 years with 4 drives. If I pass that, I will need to saxrifice my M.2 boot drive for an M.2 sata controller. iTX problems.
Node 804 has something cool, 10 drives in a complete seperate chamber with separate cooling than the “normal” parts, plus micro ATX for a PCIe SATA controller.
For us Europeans, we have to consider efficiency a lot.
My server with a b450 + 2700X + Arc A380 + 2 HDDs idles at 60W with no power tuning.
With a 0.30€ per kwh assuming always idle, that is 160€ per year.
You might be better buying an Intel NUC.
You van get a nuc13 with an i5-1240p that has decent transcoding power and idles at 8W. That is a ton of power savings per year vs consumer desktop hardware. I would do that if I had to make my server over again. Essentially the same cost with much lower power costs.
Really depends. If you have 1 device that uses 10W with 90% efficiency, you lose 1 W. If you have 10, 1W devices with 90% efficiency, you lose 1 watt.
It is less efficient if X device has lower efficiency or if you have DC/DC converters in series (which is likely with PoE), but likely it is negligable difference.
The car is because they don’t pay you shit for actual salary and a car is a huge tax cut (they budget 500 euros per month at my company). However, CoL is lower than America in most places.
They don’t pay your transit costs, some jobs have “meal check” compensation so 8€ per day or so. Not bad. Only some companies give phones. Probably ad many give work phones in America.
Also there is minimal or no pension fund contribution in many/most jobs and the pension system is on the brink of collapse it seems. No Roth IRAs here or anything. Don’t get paid enough to invest in anything. Everything goes into the house here because almost every single house that is affordable to people under 40 has to be stripped and fully renovated.
Also jobs are scarce right now. 2 companies hiring for PCB design stuff within 25 km of my house…
But as a whole, 32 required days of holiday by law, going to the doctor costs 4€ instead of 400, there isn’t any stigma about using all of your holiday, and consumer and worker protections are very good! Plus great public transportation.
What’s more efficient? Heating a small home that id well insulated and geared towards economical energy use or heating massive empty spaces of a practically non-insulated office building with massive heaters while at the same times the homes are being heated? (Albeit to a lower temperature)
Wayland. It comes up a lot: “Bug X fixed in the Plasma Wayland session.” “The Plasma Wayland session has now gained support for feature Y.” And it’s in the news quite a bit lately with the announcement that Fedora KDE is proposing to drop the Plasma X11 session for version 40 and only ship the Plasma Wayland session....
I realized I never took any great pictures of it since this was lower priority, but here is a few that I have that include the bench to give an idea imgur.com/a/KgiqHrC
We are renovating our Atelier to be a temporary house while we strip and redo the main house. My girlfriend’s parents have done a full renovation, he is an industrial electrician, her brother is a woodworker just out of school and a modular house designer. They are all super helpful and I am so grateful and learning a lot.
During the 2 weeks I worked only 2 days per week and a few weekends before we have:
trash removal of previous owner
ripped out electrical in the main house
tore down the gyprock in one room and found that the main house and atelier both have a moisture blocking barrier after the first brick layer
washed away the gritty loam paint that the previous owner had used over much of the house
primed and painted the entire 44m^2 atelier stone walls
placed 6cm cheaper insulation in the storage area since there it was only 1 brick thick instead of 2 bricks plus a space.
cut a hole in the brick wall for the gas heater stove
got a quote for switching to 3-phase 25A, 400V and prepared the site
made a temporary fence to keep our dog in the first piece of our garden that is closed on the sides
cut and dug trenches inside for gas, water, electric and internet
broke up and hauled away 6cm thick concrete slab where we had to route things under
placed and hooked up electrical in the atelier loft, storage room, and the outdoor storage shelter behind it
made technical drawings for electrical, gas, sewer, and water
found a quality 2nd hand gas stove to heat during our mild winters
dug out and mapped sewer and gas lines through the property
dug a 24 meter trench 70cm deep and laid water, gas, and 3-phase electric (in a flexible pipe) in that layer, and laid internet and sewer at ~40cm deep with a measured 1cm per meter “afwatering.”
Quotes for redoing the asbestos filled roof in the main house and currently setting up asbestos testing for the slanted wall since the attestation documentation seemed to be wrong and there is asbestos-based insulation according to a roofer + asbestos remover we got a quote from
temporarily rennovated the small bathroom, repainted, replaced the broken toilet, removed the leaky sink, and re-silicones the tiny sitting bath/shower and replaced the shower head
Found 30m^2 of click laminate for 40€. Proud of that find. Good condition too.
Next up is hooking up the gas and water fittings fully inside, getting a plumber to come test and hook us up to the main 22mm line to the boiler in the house, place and hook up the electrical in the kitchen/living room and for the appliances, find a 2nd hand oven, stove, and fume hood, and fill in the inside trenches and re-pour the concrete, place the floors and finish up for the year in the next month.
Anyone else have trouble with these GE dishwashing machines?
Mine cleans dishes well enough, but the gaskets leak easier than any other dishwasher I've ever had. I replaced the gaskets a few months ago, but if a little bit of debris builds up then it's leaking again. Also, the racks are badly corroded, but the machine is only maybe five years old. Anyway, it's just kind of funny that my aunt is coming over tomorrow and the last time she was here she noticed the dishwasher was leaking.
Miele is just a great brand, but not readily available in the US.
I have the Complete C3 vacuum when I moved ti belgium and it is the single best vacuum I have ever owned. My mom in America had even had very nice, $600 vacuums and they always suck ass after a few years. The parents of my girlfriend have had a Miele for years and still going strong.
Our washing machine is a 2nd hand Miele we got for 100€. That thing, while not huge, is so well built and I am super happy with it even if the model we found doesn’t have delay start
I found out that short flat green lawns ate a British nobility thing. Lots of other cultures had elaborate gardens and other cool things, bit the British were boring as fuck and colonized everyone.
Back before lawn mowers you had to be super rich to hire someone to pretty much full time take care of your lawn. It propogated to all of their colonies, including Africa where they would use a ton of water and non-native species to “make it feel like home.”
