I got this AP for free, and had some fun trying to configure it, and I decided to look at the inside of this thing. It has a PowerPC processor, pretty cool!...
I got a server case and some rails for free, they were annoying to build (yes, build), and I could not find anything regarding those rails online, so I decided to blog about it, in the hope of helping someone with all the same questions as me!...
And yeah, I’m sure in the future I’ll find other weird server rails, and I actually have another pair of unused rails that I don’t know anything about, they are not sliding rails, just the “shelf” kind of rail. And I might talk a bit about it, even though there is a lot less to say about them (But rack mounting them is really finicky too it seems…)
The next blog post will be about an IBM eServer 336 that I got for free too, I’ll probably separate it into multiple parts (Hardware Review + Software Tests)
Edit: I just checked and there is a small HP part number sticker: 697305-001, and they are rails for the HP D3600 storage boxes! Well I know a lot more about these rails now
Well, problem with servers mobo is that they don’t have normal fan header on them sadly… I will be careful with plugging in the right voltage fan in the right place tho, thanks for the reminder!
It’s a HP server, therefore, no extra fan header, and the current fans are a proprietary standard, I could solder something… but I’d like to keep all the default fan in there…
but G5 and G6 are going to be pretty noisy and power hungry
It’s just for fun, not running 24/7! Also, the G6 is close to silent and the G5 is indeed a jet engine, but I’ve never touched HPE servers before and I’m glad I can learn more about them!
What is the autonegociation you’re talking about here ? I never owned a POE switch, I, of course, don’t need all the port, it was the cheapest POE switch I could find near me, everything else is like 250€ or more, or 150 for unmanagable. It won’t be ON often for the moment, I just wanted a POE switch to have fun with wifi AP and in the futur IP cameras!
It is pretty quiet yeah, but not fanless I might try to mod it with some small noctua fans, won’t be optimal but it won’t run at 100% all the time, I’ll put the noisy blower back if one day I buy a enclosed rack
Homelabbing isn’t about WHY. It’s about WHY NOT. Why is so much of our homelabbing is overkill? Why not marry safe labbing if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won’t hit you on the butt on the way out, because you are fired.
Well… I have a few server, that all have 2 port (IPMI and Normal Ethernet) that’s already 10 port, plus my Desktop, plus the link nto the router, plus storage management of a JBOD (2 ports) that’s already 14 ports, and then I want to do stuff with POE Rasberry Pis (or similar) and I also have a few AP that I can now try and have fun with! I won’t use the 48 ports, but 24 ports were more expensives where I live… so, I took this one!
I made a blog post about an old IBM server! ( blog.krafting.net )
