Oh... you just remind me that I forgot to put thermal paste back on it.. (the server is actually on right know)

And it's not for 24/7 use, no worries for my bill ahah!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Not really ahah!

Probably as powerfull as your Raspberry 4 tho.

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

True, I hope i will be able to do that over the years!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Me too! but now it has this weird "retro" feel when you stumble upon something powered by a PowerPC processor

Installing some weird rails and a server in a rack ! A blog post by me! ( blog.krafting.net )

I got a server case and some rails for free, they were annoying to build (yes, build), and I could not find anything regarding those rails online, so I decided to blog about it, in the hope of helping someone with all the same questions as me!...

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks!

Angle grinder is quite an overkill solution, but I guess, when you have no other choice, you gotta do what you gotta do!

@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah indeed ahah

And yeah, I’m sure in the future I’ll find other weird server rails, and I actually have another pair of unused rails that I don’t know anything about, they are not sliding rails, just the “shelf” kind of rail. And I might talk a bit about it, even though there is a lot less to say about them (But rack mounting them is really finicky too it seems…)

The next blog post will be about an IBM eServer 336 that I got for free too, I’ll probably separate it into multiple parts (Hardware Review + Software Tests)

Edit: I just checked and there is a small HP part number sticker: 697305-001, and they are rails for the HP D3600 storage boxes! Well I know a lot more about these rails now

Did you work on one of those, because it’s pretty silent, fans at around 13-15% when using the right drives

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Have you installed the fan controller hacked firmware on those?

Plus, 360 are 1u right? So it’s a bit more noizy yeah

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Doesn’t aliexpress has the same kind of stuff for cheaper? I mean for caddies, it doesn’t need to be really high quality

It’s the P420 from HP it a PCI card, I will probably repaste it as well when adding the fan.

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Hope I could assist your issue at least a little bit.

Thanks for your help, but no one seems to answer the question about how to power the fan…

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Well, problem with servers mobo is that they don’t have normal fan header on them sadly… I will be careful with plugging in the right voltage fan in the right place tho, thanks for the reminder!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

I could not find any PCIe card that take power from the slot and transfer it to a fan header… this seems so logical but no one makes these…

If you find something on aliexpress let me know

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

It’s a HP server, therefore, no extra fan header, and the current fans are a proprietary standard, I could solder something… but I’d like to keep all the default fan in there…

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, the first one is a whole IPMI card, it’s so overkill ahah

the second one require external power, I’ve seen this design a lot yeah…

I’ll do the USB to pwm route I think, I don’t have molex or sata at all either yeah…

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

but G5 and G6 are going to be pretty noisy and power hungry

It’s just for fun, not running 24/7! Also, the G6 is close to silent and the G5 is indeed a jet engine, but I’ve never touched HPE servers before and I’m glad I can learn more about them!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

I did this for a R715 from Dell, works like a charm indeed, but I can’t find any documentation about this on old HP gear…

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Old gear is such cool and nerdy, I wonder if one day I’ll throw them out… probably not tho

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

then why iLO complains and report about a missing SD Card there ?

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

What is the autonegociation you’re talking about here ? I never owned a POE switch, I, of course, don’t need all the port, it was the cheapest POE switch I could find near me, everything else is like 250€ or more, or 150 for unmanagable. It won’t be ON often for the moment, I just wanted a POE switch to have fun with wifi AP and in the futur IP cameras!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

It is pretty quiet yeah, but not fanless I might try to mod it with some small noctua fans, won’t be optimal but it won’t run at 100% all the time, I’ll put the noisy blower back if one day I buy a enclosed rack

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Homelabbing isn’t about WHY. It’s about WHY NOT. Why is so much of our homelabbing is overkill? Why not marry safe labbing if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won’t hit you on the butt on the way out, because you are fired.

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Well… I have a few server, that all have 2 port (IPMI and Normal Ethernet) that’s already 10 port, plus my Desktop, plus the link nto the router, plus storage management of a JBOD (2 ports) that’s already 14 ports, and then I want to do stuff with POE Rasberry Pis (or similar) and I also have a few AP that I can now try and have fun with! I won’t use the 48 ports, but 24 ports were more expensives where I live… so, I took this one!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Not PoE+ so no autonegotiation

Yeah I already knew what autonego is, but this bit I didn’t understand, why POE/POE+ would affect auto nego ?

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

See my other comments ahah

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, yeah okay, well, we’ll see if I encounter this issue!
