Instance shutdown per 31 Oct 2023 - what's next for /c/fountainpens?

I’ve been having trouble keeping this instance up - right now, it’s a problem with proxy errors between the docker containers as well as with the Ansible scripts. It’s taking too much time to maintain. I’ll be shutting down wayfarershaven.eu per 31 October 2023....

That’s unfortunate, thank you for giving it a solid try!

My primary instance is stable, and the admin is quite able. I’d consider stepping up. I definitely don’t want to be the only mod for any period of time. It’s not just the time commitment, it’s the implicit non-democratic status of the sub when one person makes all the mod calls. I’m @____ there, incidentally.

Edit: Went ahead and created it as a placeholder, pending any necessary further discussion or other volunteers here. !fountainpens

Since content is instance-dependent, it might be nice to have a mirror on some other stable instance - not sure how to sync them so both get each others’ posts, but don’t duplicate though. This group in particular tends to have a lot of high-quality content and losing it is a blow - especially to noobs, who we actively want to be friendly and accessible to.

Is there a library for the API? Would be nice to seed a new community with some/all of the content here, if you don’t object. Not like the reddit mirror bot posting a ton of things, but for initial content. Would prefer not to lose it all.

That could work and is simpler - Might be scriptable, have to think on that. Don’t recall whether the request archive button is a GET or POST. Parsing out the links to posts and throwing away the others would be straightforward, ‘if /post/ in url’

I do know that I won’t get to it today - my work is finance-adjacent, and with a deadline in the next week, work is keeping me rather busier than usual.

MidwayTheMagnificent ,

I just looked - six pages of posts. Might not even bother scripting, that’s not a ton of copy/paste.

Fair point, I don’t see why a cartridge wouldn’t fit, since the chopped down converter does. That’s probably the way to go…

Clairefontaine Triomphe - it comes in lined, but for 90g paper it’s surprisingly translucent - enough so that the guide sheet they include is clearly visible.

I probably should have reduced the size of that image before posting, sorry…

Also, paper is Rhodia A5 dot grid <3

MidwayTheMagnificent OP ,

You can do either - I started with a box of Pilot Varsity disposables just to get a feel for it. Then the Preppy / Kakuno / Sport price range. Discovered Sailors, fell even more in love, collection kept expanding… Might as well use the,

Needless to say, I have a fair number currently inked. I don’t have many reserved for special purposes, save for one cheap blue/black ‘business signature’ pen that I generally always carry because some people think signature color matters.

You make your own path in this hobby, for sure. One of my true favorites is my namesake ink, I’ll use that purple shimmer anywhere :)

20+ inked, one set of duplicate inks in semi-duplicate pen (MTM in a Safari, and an Al Star), the rest are all disparate colors. Primary criteria is that it needs to make me smile in some way, or otherwise improve my life.

Primary is a Preppy with Diamine Tropical Glow - I had forgotten how much I like that one. On the road with today, also:

  • Sailor PGS (Peach Haze)
  • Safari (Pink Sugar Beach)
  • Another Preppy, sporting Ancient Charm’s Mooring on the Quinuai River, which may be the shimmeriest purpole shimmer I own…
  • Another Safari, loaded with Vinta Julia

I’ve got a ton loaded that I alternate through. I’m finding I actually like inks I thought I hated, when I put them in different pens. Just means I have to try all possible combos eventually!

MidwayTheMagnificent OP ,

I spun up a couple of docker containers with mediawiki as a test, willing to host, or we could also use something like fandom (?) - IIRC they are free, and… Well, we’re as rabid about our fandom as their usual users are about theirs.

MidwayTheMagnificent OP ,

As @tuckerm pointed out, the idea was to prevent banned people from posting.

It seemed silly, but it’s a decent way to keep the banned folks out without individuals having to keep a permanent close eye on the list.

Very bare bones at the moment, but it exists. wayfarershaven.eu/c/pen_swap !pen_swap
