Is it just Kbin, or does every fediverse service have the issue of being totally swarmed with bots advertising illegal pharmaceuticals? Is this just the result of limited moderation?

Kbin seems more affected than others from what I can see in reports but it exists on other instances too.

It is a moderation issue in the sense that it is too easy for these bots to sign up. Individual instances could improve this by requiring an application for example.

With Lemmy, we have seen huge numbers of bots at times but most large Lemmy instances have registration applications turned on. As in you apply to join an instance instead of just being able to make an account.

By default this means waiting for manual approval of your account, but many instances set up automated approval behind the scenes.

This function means many spam bots are averted before the public sees them, and also spammers avoid instances with registration applications.

I mention this because Kbin, or at least Kbin.social, doesn't appear to have registration applications which makes it a prime target for spam.

Also Lemmy has coordination between dozens of instance admins sharing details of spammers. I.e. a lot of hard work behind the scenes. I'd guess the lack of moderation at the admin level also accounts for part of the issue on kbin.

(A lot of Lemmy spam also comes via federation from Kbin.social, so much that many instances block high spam communities on Kbin and some block Kbin completely).

@NotTheOnlyGamer It's a Kbin.social issue, signups are a bit too open and moderation cannot keep up. :/

It’s just Kbin and I hate it 🙂 Kbin has 10x more spam than Lemmy due to poor moderation.

I, personally, have been blocking the users submitting the spam. This isn't a good solution, but it does clear my feed out and make it so that I forget the spam is there until I see another user I need to block.

The other thing I have been doing is submitting content to my favorite magazines - if we actively engage the mags, we can force the spam down.

@kbin kbin is constantly returning 50x and 404 errors to me for the last few weeks. It's literally unusable, even for browsing. What's going on? Is it just me? should I move on to a different instance?

I have been feeling crock for a few weeks, I have done the antibiotics / steroids thing and I am feeling as rough as a Badgers arse. I thought that I would try the stuff that was shoveled down my throat as a kid, I couldn't find any and my wife suggested these 2 alternatives. I am pleased to say that I am feeling some improvement.

Flipboard stops tweeting, launches new podcast about decentralized social apps ( techcrunch.com )

Social magazine app Flipboard had already committed to joining the "fediverse" -- the decentralized social web, which includes apps like Mastodon. Now, it’s doubling down on those ambitions with an announcement that it will stop tweeting while also launching a new podcast devoted to exploring the topic of decentralized social...

Mastodon is Rewinding the Clock on Social Media — in a Good Way ( chrlschn.medium.com )

A comment on a Hacker News thread on a Business Insider article titled It’s not just you — no one is posting on social media anymore got me thinking about my experience with switching to Mastodon and why I have found it a refreshing experience.

    This is the right answer.

Collecting profile pics, posts, likes, and so on, is basically what is needed to federate. If they don't collect that, they can't display things from other instances.
And guess what our instances will collect the same data from Threads to be able to display stuff from there...

I still don't get this part of kbin. Anyway, I hope you are having a great day.

    Phanatik ,

@BeardedPip It's what links with Mastodon. If you go to a community's Microblog page, you'll see a bunch of posts that you can trace back to Mastodon. How it shows up in that community is because the community looks for certain . If a Mastodon post has that and the community is accepting it, then that post will show up in the Microblog for that community.
