Rentlar , (edited ) to Japanese Language in My mom has this souvenir from Japan and doesnt remember which side is up... đŸ€Š

Generally when you have “dots” like the ones you see on the top, the thinner side of the brush stroke starts at the top. (道)

Rentlar , (edited ) to Work Reform in The fun thing about needing a job is that all the advice is either incredibly demeaning or incredibly futile. Usually both

As @Humana said, a lot of “career advice” is or can seem contradictory.

Being a recruiter itself sounds like hell as much as looking for a job. Having to be the one who communicates bad news to so many people all the time, having to go through reams of resumes and bullshit, your career being specifically tied to whether firms are hiring or not, which leads to being laid off followed by employers rushing to find people to hire with again

Looking for jobs takes practice and a whole lot of luck. “Leverage your network” is just bullshit speak for talk to people you know who might know where a job for you is. Firms hire at random times during the year, some months no bites, others you’ll get multiple.

Remember this variance is not your fault whatsoever and has nothing to do with your abilities.

The best time to look is while you have work but the second best time is now.

I know it is daunting, and the search feels endless. It might take you hundreds of rejections and 10 tries of getting very close but not making it but you only need 1 offer at minimum.

Like a “Continue?” screen at the arcade, you only lose if you give up.

Rentlar , to Work Reform in Gen Z is unhappier at work than any other generation. Here are the two things they want.

It takes a young person being kicked down in a vulnerable moment one time to realize work doesn’t care for them and they owe them no loyalty. And since a long time, junior workers are the first to get the axe for circumstances that are no fault of their own.

And when being at a salary that you can barely make it now, staying at that salary as costs shoot up is untenable. So no surprises young workers aren’t buying this loyalty bull.

Rentlar , to Work Reform in My Starbucks addicted office manager finally switched

I’m not a frequent coffee drinker, but Starbucks coffee tastes to me as if I am drinking a coffee-flavoured smoothie with a burnt tongue. Is that enjoyable?

Rentlar , to Japanese Language in 搉 is pronounced き↑ち↓ but 侍搉 is ă”â†‘ăă€

It’s true that other combos for this have kichi as onyomi
this probably is one of those many exceptions.

Rentlar , (edited ) to Japanese Language in 搉 is pronounced き↑ち↓ but 侍搉 is ă”â†‘ăă€

It’s Onyomi (The Chinese-based phonetic way) vs. Kunyomi (the Japanese own phonetic way) of pronunciation.

Like 濃 kokoro vs. ćżƒè‡“ shinzou. The latter in simplified Chinese that this is based off of is ćżƒè„ (Xinzang), which sounds similar.

Commonly, Onyomi is used when multiple kanji are used to describe a single “word” or concept, and Kunyomi is often used when on its own or is a verb with its own trailing character conjugation (okurigana).

Many exceptions apply but I hope this rule of thumb helps you.

Rentlar , to Work Reform in Employees are spending the equivalent of a month's grocery bill on the return to the office–and growing more resentful than ever, new survey finds

Thanks! The last job I held in Toronto was closer to that. Not fun.

Rentlar , to Work Reform in Employees are spending the equivalent of a month's grocery bill on the return to the office–and growing more resentful than ever, new survey finds

I’m real lucky that I can bike 30 minutes or transit 45 minutes to work each way. Having to spend that same amount of time in a car every day would suck the life out of me and the enioyment of my job.

Rentlar , to Work Reform in The majority of Americans are not engaged at work, 70% of managers have no training to lead a hybrid team and it could be killing employee engagement

Exactly. A good manager is one who shields you from upper management bullshit and lets you do your thing, your way, so long as you contribute your part to the team.

oh neat! Still like how that edge looks

Nice cutting work!

Judge SLAMS man who BLASTED her in horrifying ‘incident’

Clickbaited that for you

Rentlar , to Work Reform in The 4-day workweek was a longshot. The UAW isn’t giving up

Fighting for a 32h/4day work week is a great way to get a proper 40h/5day work week as a concession. But I’ve heard some union contracts get 72h/9 day fortnights (5-4-5-4) so that’s a promising sign.

Rentlar , to Fediverse in A case for preemptively defederating with Threads

On the Lemmy and Kbin Magazine side of things, Threads won’t be a huge threat as most discussion will stay on existing communities/magazines, and most of the same users will be there with some interaction from Threads users.

On the Mastodon and the microblog side of things Threads will be interesting and I think the healthiest option is some server disconnect from Threads and others don’t. What you don’t want is ALL the discussion happening on threads and within threads, Threads should be set up as a gateway to the rest of the Fediverse despite the size difference.

Rentlar , to Work Reform in Volkswagen becomes the latest automaker to hike wages for U.S. factory workers, raises pay 11%

The point the UAW needs to drive home is that these raises at the other companies wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the union’s strike against the Big Three rustling their jimmies.
