If you don't use Bing with Edge, Microsoft will tell you your computer needs repairing.

They are not wrong.

To mend your machine:

  1. Ditch Windows
  2. Install Plasma
  3. Your computer is ready.

"While the department understands the need [for journalists] to be on-site, it is never acceptable to interfere with official police duties and assaulting an officer of the law — no matter the degree — will never be tolerated," the statement read.

Trying to interact with police intent on arresting you is a Simon Says game you can't beat. ACAB.

It makes sense, the protestors were clear and honest about their non-violent intentions, which is perfect as a target of oppression. They don't get any warning for real crimes like school shootings so there's nothing they can do, too bad.

Sure beats taking 24 hours by train to get from Dallas to Houston via San Antonio.

PS: Houston Amtrak Station itself is a nightmare to find nestled under the intersection of I-10 and I-45. Hope they get a new one in a location better accessible by transit with the High Speed Line.

Periodic Cribbage Board… I kinda dig it.

Yep. Boeing and other big companies that place money over everything need to start facing material consequences for their failures. The courts need to stop babying the rich and powerful. The fact that these issues are cropping up is being over decades Boeing has rejected quality over doing the bare minimum, this is the result and people are going to start feeling very unsafe in planes if they don’t start relearning their old ways.

Rentlar ,

Damn, if only the Sounder North train ran more than twice a day every AM rush, having I5 back up would be less of an issue. Take note Shohomish County and WSDOT!

Rentlar ,

Councillor Nelson, the solution is simple. Get employers to pay enough for the time people spend commuting and the commuters will come back. That’s what the “market” is saying, businesses whining about it to you isn’t going to change that. Transit oriented development can also improve commuting and get more jobs downtown.

I love gen-Z's attitude towards corporate culture ( lemmy.world )

i recently lost my job and it’s horrible being in the ‘unemployed’ class – you’re made to feel worthless, you have to take advice from people, perfectly well meaning of course, that are basically encouragement on digging your own grave - i love being in the position where i have to do some fake elizabethian courting...

Nobody is ever excited to carry out work for someone else. If you disagree, I have a lawn you can mow if you think that work is so exciting on it’s own.

I might if I was at all interested in plants, gardening, keeping outdoors neat etc. Yes, not every job is exciting to do for someone else but there are many areas that people are excited and happy to work for…

My friends are tolerating going through hell in med school, awful residency pay because they want to help cure people. If they thought all work was equally unexciting then they could become some middle manager in the finance sector.

As someone who posts in !trains and !fuckcars a fair bit wouldn’t it make sense that carrying out work for someone where I help improve public transport in some way is exciting?

Rentlar ,

I had conservative parents and I might have grown up the same… but I slid WAY to the left which I attribute to one very specific and pivotal event: watching the news and protests around Trump getting elected while I was sitting in a McDonald’s in Thorncliffe Park. Until that day I was pretty indifferent to politics and stuff, but this had me question: what injustice in this world led to this crazy person to take power?

As @Humana said, a lot of “career advice” is or can seem contradictory.

Being a recruiter itself sounds like hell as much as looking for a job. Having to be the one who communicates bad news to so many people all the time, having to go through reams of resumes and bullshit, your career being specifically tied to whether firms are hiring or not, which leads to being laid off followed by employers rushing to find people to hire with again…

Looking for jobs takes practice and a whole lot of luck. “Leverage your network” is just bullshit speak for talk to people you know who might know where a job for you is. Firms hire at random times during the year, some months no bites, others you’ll get multiple.

Remember this variance is not your fault whatsoever and has nothing to do with your abilities.

The best time to look is while you have work but the second best time is now.

I know it is daunting, and the search feels endless. It might take you hundreds of rejections and 10 tries of getting very close but not making it but you only need 1 offer at minimum.

Like a “Continue?” screen at the arcade, you only lose if you give up.

Rentlar ,

It takes a young person being kicked down in a vulnerable moment one time to realize work doesn’t care for them and they owe them no loyalty. And since a long time, junior workers are the first to get the axe for circumstances that are no fault of their own.

And when being at a salary that you can barely make it now, staying at that salary as costs shoot up is untenable. So no surprises young workers aren’t buying this loyalty bull.

I’m not a frequent coffee drinker, but Starbucks coffee tastes to me as if I am drinking a coffee-flavoured smoothie with a burnt tongue. Is that enjoyable?

It’s Onyomi (The Chinese-based phonetic way) vs. Kunyomi (the Japanese own phonetic way) of pronunciation.

Like 心 kokoro vs. 心臓 shinzou. The latter in simplified Chinese that this is based off of is 心脏 (Xinzang), which sounds similar.

Commonly, Onyomi is used when multiple kanji are used to describe a single “word” or concept, and Kunyomi is often used when on its own or is a verb with its own trailing character conjugation (okurigana).

Many exceptions apply but I hope this rule of thumb helps you.

Rentlar ,

It’s true that other combos for this have kichi as onyomi… this probably is one of those many exceptions.

Rentlar ,

I’m real lucky that I can bike 30 minutes or transit 45 minutes to work each way. Having to spend that same amount of time in a car every day would suck the life out of me and the enioyment of my job.

Rentlar ,

Thanks! The last job I held in Toronto was closer to that. Not fun.

Rentlar ,

Exactly. A good manager is one who shields you from upper management bullshit and lets you do your thing, your way, so long as you contribute your part to the team.

What the new tech creator-content platforms and economy miss

Adam Neely on "quitting " puts two ideas together (that I hadn't) and implicitly asks "what if the new platform/economy fails you"

Longevity and freedom from traditional gatekeepers. The content-creator economy fails on these promises.

Burn out is baked in and ignoring the traditional gate-keepers is at your own very serious risk.

The world is the same, tech is just milking us.

Part of the issue is that yeah sure, the music industry is full of fat cats, arrogance, connections and dumb luck, but there is a pathway for small artists to get noticed and slowly build up a career, gain an audience, connect with fans at local shows, and just having fun with your band without huge expectations.

Like Adam says with Youtube those fat cats are instead the algorithms. The issue is that the algorithms are like a treadmill that systematically keeps speeding up, lowering payouts, reducing exposure and raising roadblocks unless you follow an ever-increasing amount of rules. People starting out there are at even more of disadvantage to begin with.

All so that Google and other tech platforms can extract more money out of people. We need a Fediverse music sharing service or something.

Fighting for a 32h/4day work week is a great way to get a proper 40h/5day work week as a concession. But I’ve heard some union contracts get 72h/9 day fortnights (5-4-5-4) so that’s a promising sign.

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads ( kbin.social )

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

Rentlar ,

On the Lemmy and Kbin Magazine side of things, Threads won’t be a huge threat as most discussion will stay on existing communities/magazines, and most of the same users will be there with some interaction from Threads users.

On the Mastodon and the microblog side of things Threads will be interesting and I think the healthiest option is some server disconnect from Threads and others don’t. What you don’t want is ALL the discussion happening on threads and within threads, Threads should be set up as a gateway to the rest of the Fediverse despite the size difference.

Rentlar ,

The point the UAW needs to drive home is that these raises at the other companies wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the union’s strike against the Big Three rustling their jimmies.

Rentlar ,

Dang, I’ve seen way cleaner and better organized homeless camps and shantytowns than some of the featured dollar stores and warehouses.

If freight is seriously being dumped on the employees (or singular EMPLOYEE) before they can stock the previous shipments, or left to such neglect that birds shit on the goods, then at that point as an employee you’d be better off allowing customers to take the boxes with them to clear up inventory.

Should be a sign saying, “thieves welcome, just don’t pull a gun on me.”

Rentlar ,

Seriously, if someone is supposed to be a cashier, stock clerk, security guard/watchman, delivery handler all at once, paying them anything less than $25/hr is a freaking disgrace.

Rentlar ,

The invidious link worked after half a minute, in Canada.

Rentlar ,

It’s revenue not profit but anyway…

Fun fact from this is The Home Depot receives revenue of an average worker’s salary in roughly 3 bars of “The Home Depot Song”

Rentlar ,

Conflating “to make money” with “revenue” instead of profit is the iffy part for me… I apologize for not being clear about that.

At the risk of entering pedant territory, the idea of “making” the money is by doing something that would cause a person to pay more than before. If acquiring the “before” and the act of adding value incur costs, then to me, the “money made” is the revenue less those costs.

Rentlar ,

Please see my reply to the other commenter, my issue is with “making money” being conflated with revenue.

Rentlar ,

First a Pharmageddon, now we have a Cookpocalypse! Let this be the end of times for greedy American profiteers relying on work from vastly underpaid Americans.

Rentlar ,

A political, solidarity, secondary strike etc. is where a union or group under an in-force bargaining agreement are not allowed to strike just because their friends/fellow workers are striking. While not under a collective agreement then they can strike. If everyone’s agreement expires simultaneously, then it is possible for any or every group to strike.

Rentlar ,

It’s a tough balance to strike for sure. Part of female empowerment is to de-program young and old adults from environments where male identity was default/dominant and that’s absolutely important. For kids on the other hand that don’t have that default to begin with, it is definitely possible for them to feel left out or alienated if given that same unbalanced messaging.

Rentlar ,

Maybe Occupational Health and Safety should run commercials being like “If you’re a real man, you have a 3 point hold whenever you’re on a ladder and have someone watch you.”
