what is financial freedom? like, never having to worry about money?

because even billionaires aren't financially free then.

Turkey_Titty_city ,

savings and COD are 4-5+% right now.

The landlords have much bigger pitchforks. Called the police, and the city government.

and they will fight any and every expansion of the housing market in order to protect their power and further increase housing values.

Texas Takes Attacks on Austin to New Level With “Death Star” Law ( slate.com )

The goal of Death Star is simple. The deeply conservative Texas Legislature wants to effectively deny cities—the state’s large Democratic-leaning cities, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin in particular—the ability to pass local laws and regulations in eight major policy areas: agriculture, business and commerce, finance,...

The empire is just trying to bring order to a chaotic galaxy of stupid aliens who just need to be taught how to be better, like the white-skinned humans.

I am. I make about 120K to work from home, and do maybe 10 hours of actual work a week. Rest of it I'm just dicking around on the internet or playing video games.

However, in my city, when I socialize, people seem to think I am living in poverty, wasting my life, etc. Apparently I'm suppose to be working 60 hour weeks to make 200K+, and live in a million+ dollar house and all that crap. IDGI, but that is the attitude in my city.

My dream was to be a professor, but I realize that making 60K and working 100hr weeks was not a recipe for being miserable forever.

Turkey_Titty_city ,

Same here man.

And yet soooo many people I meet seem to think this lifestyle is 'for losers'. Apparently you are supposed to be a miserable corporate drone so you can make an extra few bucks to spend on useless crap that you don't need.

Turkey_Titty_city ,

where do you find your partner?

I'm nearly 40 and every lady I try to date thinks a low stress lifestyle with a work/life balance is a horrible thing. They are all obsessed with 'ambition'. And when i talk about wanting to actually be a father to my children and having a life outside of my job, they basically tell me to f myself and that I am not a 'real man'.

Turkey_Titty_city ,

Same here.

Where do you guys find women who are cool with that lifestyle? I'm so jealous. Every woman I meet thinks DIY is for 'poor people'.

It's Almost Impossible To Find A Decent Used Car Under $20,000 ( jalopnik.com )

Vehicles under $15k are 1.6% of the market, and their share of the market has dropped over 90% since 2019. The old advice that you can get a beater and drive it in to the ground for $5k hasn't been true for years but it still seems pervasive in personal finance spaces.

I bought a new car in 2018 for 19K. Everyone I know flipped at me for 'wasting money' and not buying a 5yo+ 10K car that looked like shit with 100K miles.

It's now worth 21K, after 50K miles.

I'm looking at trading it in for a 35K car in the next two years, and watching the value on that car never go down either.

dude, everyone says the housing market will crash for 15+ year now.

We have to accept the old rules of economy are out the window. govt will bail and stimulate to no need the second the market slows down.

this is the new normal. truth is our inflated economy can't ever allow housing values to go down anymore without causing a depression so the govt won't allow it.

Pay off student loan debt or invest?

Is there a general rule of thumb on student loan interest rates and whether or not it’s better to pay off ASAP vs invest in an index fund? Sold a lot of company stock from an ESPP and RSU program that happens to be the value of our household’s student loan debt that is just entering repayment after graduation. Can’t tell...

Turkey_Titty_city ,

Depends on the interest rates. If your rocking a 5% loan, yeah, pay that off first. If you're rocking a 2-3% loan, invest.

Turkey_Titty_city ,

Good.

These are normal interest rates, historically. We should not be living an economy where loans are basically free. If companies fail because they can't pay back their loans, good. They should fail. 0-1% loans are not a good thing they encourage way too much risk and way too much over leveraging.

it's more like, male on male sex is considered disgusting, female on female sex isn't.

probably because male on male sex assumes anal penetration.

How are you doing relative to the 1x by 30 / 2x by 35 / 3x by 40 salary rule for retirement savings? ( kbin.social )

/r/personalfinance was one of my more frequented subreddits and I find it pretty valuable. I figure I should try to help get the ball rolling over in the Fediverse and it seems like this is the most active substitute so far....

Turkey_Titty_city ,

I've only been working for 10 years but I have 2x at 40. I also live a low consumption lifestyle, so I'm not worried at all, and my salary has gone up 50% in the past 4 years. I now make 120K and have about 250K in assets. I do run CC debt now, usually about 3-4K but only on 0% interest rates for large purchases like furniture and appliances, which i have had to make a lot of recently.

Sadly I most of my peers have nothing saved for retirement or like 1x at most... and live high consumption lifestyles. People who make half what I make spending like 2-3x as much. I save 25% of my take home. Most are depending on parental wealth inheritance to buy homes and pay for retirement.

Anybody remember Usenet? ( kbin.social )

So I've finally been doing my little reddit/twitter migration against my better judgement (my better judgement would say to take the opportunity to get off the internet but who listens to that loser). I'm finding all these platforms interesting, I particularly like how kbin combines both formats and links up to Mastodon, that's...

Yes. plenty of articles coming out about how many in gen z are technology illiterate. I am started to see it at my workplace since we hire a lot of fresh college grads. getting more support calls for completely inane stuff that shows the person has zero basic technological knowledge, like the type of stuff that my you see from boomers. and often it's the issue is simple the user doing things wrong and refusing to understand or learn to do them correctly, like a boomer.

it's wild to think a 22yo is incompetent at basic computer skills, but like you said, all they do is social media crap on their phones. they have no idea how to actually work with PC/Mac applications, let alone solve basic problems or change settings.

Republicans try to stop military’s electrification with mind-bogglingly dumb proposals ( electrek.co )

Several Republican representatives have proposed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act to try to stop the Pentagon’s electrification. The proposals sound so mind-bogglingly dumb that they look like they were written by 19th-century Luddites or the fossil fuel industry itself....

The system is working. It's designed to enrich the wealthy and extract that wealth from the poor.

The entire medical industrial complex is not going to give up their wealth willingly.

Plus most doctors are born into money already. They don't ever associate with ordinary people in the lower 80% of households.
