I'm currently traveling for months at a time and my homelab has become unreachable to me over VPN due to a unknown complication after a power outage....
WAT? I've never heard a UPS referred to as "kinda like a bomb" before.
Keep your UPS maintained, replace the batteries when they age out, and it will be fine. If your UPS supports automated self-tests, use them.
My employer has UPS units spread all over the region we operate in, and we don't have any issues, despite leaving them mostly unattended for years. I have several in my house and I've never given them a second thought aside from battery replacements.
So I’m planning out a bathroom remodel and part of that is replacing the vent fan because currently mine is just venting into my attic (no bueno). I know normally bathrooms are vented out through the roof but my bathroom is on an exterior wall so I was wondering if I could just vent it out the side of the house. I’m going to...
I manage hundreds of servers at work. They each have a BMC (remote power on/off, reset, KVM, etc) and we need to use those features frequently. I’ve been using a Google Docs spreadsheet to track their URLs, what each box is used for, specs, etc but it feels like a dynamic web app would be better for this purpose. Does anyone...
We use a separate subdomain. For example, all our hosts are joined to the ad.example.com domain, so remote management would be the same hostname on ilo.example.com.
We also have all HP hardware (at least for servers), so we have everything in OneView. Other devices (NetScaler SDX appliances, other stuff with management interfaces) just have their interface in that subdomain and it works out great.
So, I just need to rant for a minute about what’s just happened. It’s made me feel fairly disposable as a worker. I work in I.T. support. I help people who can’t operate technology with highly complicated issues. I am highly skilled, well trained and I have a diverse set of understanding for technical issues....
If in the US, generally that would be an FMLA issue. But given the size of the company, FMLA doesn’t apply. As I recall, it only applies to companies bigger than 25 or 50 employees. I used to work for a small MSP, and we had about 20 employees. I had no guarantee of any parental leave when my kid was born, so I had to work remotely and take PTO to cover my time off. It was not how I wanted it to go.

What do you use to track BMCs/KVMs/IPMI?
