Personally, as a rule of thumb, I don’t think you can have enough in savings.
Our society is built upon going into debt… and I’d rather pay up front for things like a replacement vehicle or heater/pump or what have you, which means having enough to survive on—as you are inferring—and enough to survive Murphy making an unannounced and unwelcome visit.
I mean, 1% interest is admittedly criminal, but it’s still better than the 0% in checking. And a month’s wages feels like a lot—to me—to leave entirely idle.
Everything else though sounds like you’re well and ahead of the game though! Kudos for balancing your portfolio. 👍
I mean, the easiest way would be to read the novels by publication date… I don’t think there’s a short cut around that.
That said, having full context is… not always worthwhile. Sometimes just knowing that something happened in the past is more enjoyable than reading it in practice.
The numbered books tend to only have anything resembling continuity if the same author is involved. Peter David and John Vornholt come immediately to mind as ones to do that.
A Stitch in Time (By Garak’s actor) also gets referenced, but that book is an extra special case in the franchise.
Outside of the authors referencing their own work, sometimes New Frontier gets referenced: mostly in the form of Zak Kebron (The BEST character to ever happen to Trek) being Worf’s old academy roommate, or in the form of a major disaster hitting the entire quadrant and you get little cuts to various ships…
The fall was published after Nemesis, and the rules on novels were changed from being self contained to interconnected, and they abandoned the numbered novel system.
Instead of rare bursts of continuity, you get random bursts of discontinuity, as the authors have different opinions on how to portray shared OCs, or takes on an event or its significance.
Dunno if it’s true or not, but I remember reading that Picard brought being shaved bald to the mainstream. So like, folks younger than the thinning hair age would do it.
Again, can’t vouch for if it’s true or not, but if true, it would suggest it might be possible…
… that said, a cool character would probably have to wear one. And not just nameless background extras.
I don’t know who greenlit this supposed celebration of TAS, but the writing is cheap, lowbrow and cringey. It’s a total shame that the amazing animation and sound design are paired with this quality of writing. None of the three eps released so far impressed me....
I liked the little look into the lower decks of the Orions, especially the plagiarism line; but the mysterious ship is getting less mysterious in the not-so-fun way.
Boimler and Rutherford are absolute dweebs. It was different having such a low stakes B-Plot. I feel like their story was missing a little something though. Still good fun.
Really enjoyed the A-Plot. Tendi does such a great job balancing being sunshine and rainbows and underworld assassin. I’m a little surprised her ride home wasn’t stolen/stripped for parts.
It was weird seeing T’Lyn, not just admit, but volunteer that she was friends with Mariner and Tendi. I don’t think we’ve ever seen a Vulcan do that. I mean, sure Spock and Tuvok have admitted they were friends with their respective captains, but only ever in some form of private non-sexual intimacy. But, as established, T’Lyn is a rebel, so it somehow fits her really well.
Contrasting what Shaxs said about his experience at the black mountain… I feel like the Koala intervened in this episode. (And possibly as well in the S2 finale)
Considering how LD loosely follows the plots from the original movies… I guess that just begs the question: What does a Koala need with a space ship?
I’m somehow surprised and yet not that there’s going to be a CYOA type story. I mean, I’m very surprised it’s a thing, but I’m not surprised that Ryan North is attached to it. I highly recommend reading Romeo and/or Juliet. It’s hilarious and absolutely worth reading.
My biggest complaint with Live Action Trek vs the two Animation shows is that they seem obsessed with giving us a black ship on a black background. It’s nice to be given a reprieve, even if for only one episode.
