FCC pushes ISPs to fix security flaws in Internet routing

Chair: Addressing BGP flaws will "help make our Internet routing more secure."

@arstechnica Some transit providers are already requiring smaller ASNs (like hosting providers) to have routes in the RPKI before they will be accepted. My employer ran into this recently due to the Cogent/Tata pissing match, when we tried to bring up our backup service unilaterally by changing our BGP. Our upstream took the routes from us (their long-trusted customer & BGP peer) but they all were dropped by nexthops. Annoying to learn in a DR situation, but a good thing.

@arstechnica I want them to succeed, only so that they can demostrate what a dangerous clownshow Musk is running at Neuralink.

Big AI companies sign safety pledge

Promise not to deploy AIs if severe risks cannot be addressed and mitigated.

@arstechnica Sounds like “severe” may be doing a lot of work there.

If you hypothesize an existential risk to all of humanity from psuedo-, that becomes your definition of a “severe” risk. Mere algorithmic enforcement and exacerbation of existing social ills is barely a blip on that scale, so why worry about that?

They’re ALREADY deploying tools with severe risks. We already have & search degradation problems that are not being mitigated by these companies.

@arstechnica None of those things which are not Search are things I want to do in 99% of the cases where I wish to perform a search.

I remember when Google Search was applauded for it’s clean UI, simplicity, and tight focus.

We have lost our way.
