neuracnu , to Work Reform in Many stunt performers are reluctant to report head injuries, study finds
@neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Advocacy for a best-stunt-ensemble academy award sounds swell and all, but what’s to prevent that from leading to a stunts arms race that will simultaneously lead to more work and prestige in the field and absolutely lead to more people getting hurt?

@neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Am I the only one who thinks that the design decision to eliminate the ability for cars to both cross Dexter or make left turns anywhere is a deliberate choice to create driver frustration and reduce favorable attitudes towards building more of these?

Normal protected intersections are terrific and allow automotive traffic to flow in all directions. What was the thought process here?

neuracnu , to Seattle in What light rail riders can expect now, after weeks of repair
@neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

tl;dr: Between the University Street and Westlake stations, the tracks make a 90-degree turn. When taking this turn, riders were experiencing a very herky-jerky ride. The closures and repairs were intended to fix that. The sharp turn had caused the tracks to wear down in the spots where the wheels were grinding against them. This wear-down lead to extra space between the rails that the train wheels would slide back and forth on (causing the train car to rock back and forth). The repair involved replacing the rails at the 90-degree bend.

@neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Aaaaand the pull quote that ties the whole thing together:

Headlines about a nightmare tenant and a homeless landlord get more attention than stories about a somewhat rudderless guy from a privileged background making a hash of managing his father’s property. Hunter said The Seattle Times didn’t even contact him before running Roth’s self-serving version of the story.

neuracnu OP , to Seattle in KIRO7: 85 ballots reach King County Elections Office after sitting in out-of-service mailbox
@neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I had something similar happen with the mailbox on my block. Thieves tried to jimmy the lock on the mailbox to steal outgoing mail, but only managed to destroy the cylinder. The post office couldn’t get into so they just ignored the mail that was inside. No signs, no new mailbox, no notice to neighbors, nothing. For months.

It was that way for months until the city sent me a late notice on my property tax bill. That’s when I noticed the check hadn’t been cashed and the mailbox was overflowing.

I talked to the postmaster about it and he was all “yeah, we know it’s busted lol, a replacement is coming”. He didn’t give a shit about all the mail that was in there. I bugged them about it weekly after that, and covered up the slot with gorilla tape and made up laminated signs that said the mailbox was broken and not usable (and that all the mail was locked inside) with directions to the nearest usable mailbox and the contact info of the postmaster.

It got replaced a few weeks after that.

neuracnu , to Seattle in Report: Amazon tells its employees it is monitoring badge swipes
@neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Seattle resident here and ex-Amazon employee. Amazon has security staff (previously Securitas aka: Pinkertons) at all building badge entry points who specifically monitor for that kind of thing.

Also, it’s hard for me to believe that Amazon was ever NOT monitoring, measuring and aggregating employee badge swipe data. That’s far too useful a data point on individual employee behavior to leave it on the table. And there’s zero obligation to either the public or Amazon’s employees to disclose that they’re doing it.

@neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The Sound Transit Board also blew off the concerns of Seattle Subway and Transit Equity For All when they decided to torch $170M in funds (and 2 whole years) to study precisely how terrible an idea it will be to eliminate useful stations in place of putting a transit stop on the doorstep of the city jail and a BMW dealership instead of in the middle of the CID. And also rob midtown (First Hill) of their connecting station.

Note the logo on the status window there: TrustArc.

A little searching for that company shows that this dark pattern is effectively a feature of their service. Twitter user “pixelscript” dug into their javascript a bit to find the cause of the delay. It turns out that, as you may have guessed, this isn’t any kind of asynchronous callback pause waiting on the remote server to do something. It’s just a self-imposed client side delay; because they feel like making you wait.
