One of the richest men in the 1920s was Andrew Mellon — an early prophet of trickle-down economics.

Yesterday we learned that his grandson, Timothy Mellon, gave a Trump super PAC one of the largest political donations ever.

This is how dynastic wealth works.

Wealth tax now.

patcanfield ,

@rbreich There exists a wealth tax--I believe it's $25000 free of tax from an estate-There Is No reason Anyone, including Farmer's kids that should Not pay this tax! We are All Created equal! Parents and Everyone can work their tails off doing what it is they do--why should only any rich kid benefit? Chuck Grassley?

The CFPB capped credit card fees. Banks are suing.

Medicare is negotiating drug prices. Pharma is suing.

The FTC banned noncompetes. Business groups are suing.

59 years ago today, Griswold v. Connecticut guaranteed the right to birth control.

Justice Thomas says the Supreme Court should "reconsider" that ruling.

And this week, 38 GOP senators voted against the Right to Contraception Act.

Republicans are coming for birth control.

patcanfield ,

@rbreich They are all scared to death believing the Great Replacement Theory. If whites don't quit aborting--or even Preventing pregnancy' Republicans will no longer exist!

Receiving lavish gifts from donors and openly supporting insurrectionists aren't typically behaviors we expect of Supreme Court justices. Yet here we are. With no indication the Court intends to actually police itself, it's long past time for reform. Your move, Congress. https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/supreme-court-recusal-reform-alito

patcanfield ,

@georgetakei Certainly I whole-heartedly agree Both Thomas and Alito should (retire/resign) recuse themselves from future case a Trump opinion is involved. It seems Both SCOTUS justices are saying, 'I Dare you'-to impeach (Sounds like Putin threatening Nukes) I don't know what Sherrod is a-feared of. I am Sickened.

All nine Republican senators running for reelection this year just voted against the right to contraception:

John Barrasso
Marsha Blackburn
Kevin Cramer
Ted Cruz
Deb Fischer
Josh Hawley
Pete Ricketts
Rick Scott
Roger Wicker

So much for the party of "freedom."

50 billionaire families have already poured $600M+ into this year's elections — mostly in support of Trump.

That's only 0.6% of their total wealth. It essentially costs them nothing to drown our democracy in dark money.

@rbreich All I can say to this is: Believe what Democrats say! Republicans do not Know any more, even what the Truth Is!

Billionaires aren’t just supporting Trump for the tax cuts.

As Peter Thiel once admitted: “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.”

Make no mistake: The goal of American oligarchy is to tear down democracy itself.

patcanfield ,

@rbreich Not that the oligarchy won't admit to democracy 'not working for them' as long as They get 10 votes for every vote the 'Lower' classes get

Trump called fallen service members "losers" and "suckers" — according to his chief of staff — he publicly accused soldiers with PTSD of not being "strong," demeaned POWs, and insulted Gold Star parents & a widow. When he pretends to honor service members today, don't believe it.

50 billionaire families have spent $600 million+ on the 2024 elections, which is .06% of their total wealth.

The equivalent donation for an avg household would be ~$100.

This means 50 billionaires have the political-spending capacity of 6 million American families.

Oligarchy.

patcanfield ,

@rbreich Through Not our US Constitution but the US (So-Called) Supreme Court. And This is the result of so FEW American patriots in the Republican party. never before in my life have I observed such a nauseating group of congressmen

Wondering if wealth inequality is out of control?

Well, Jeff Bezos made over $7.9 million an hour last year.

In just 13 minutes, he made the equivalent of what a typical person earns in a lifetime.

Don't tell me that the rich can't afford a wealth tax.

patcanfield ,

@rbreich At 10% interest/return (which is not unreasonable given the (way it is-rather than explaining)---$1 million creates a $100,000 return. 1 billion is 1,000 million

813 US billionaires control a record $5.7 trillion in wealth.

The bottom 50% of Americans control $3.7 trillion in wealth.

When ~800 people control more wealth than half a country’s population, we have a very serious problem.

patcanfield ,

@rbreich Biden will implement a new tax structure next year with the Democratic Majority Congress, along with a number of remedy for what the Republican Majorities have cursed Americans with for 40 years.

The FTC alleges that a major US oil exec colluded with OPEC to cut production and drive up prices.

Research found that Big Oil price fixing may have contributed to 27% of total inflation in 2021.

When I say corporate greed is driving inflation, this is what I mean.

The effective federal corporate income tax rate:

1950: 50%
1990: 25%
2020: 13%

Stop asking "but how we will pay for it?" Restore the corporate tax rate.

That is how we will pay for it.

patcanfield ,

@rbreich AS I respond to all questions of why and How we shall repay the National debt--1st: It's taken 44 years to reach be this high, we have 44 years to bring it back to what it was. 2: The CAUSE of the National Debt is the decrease in revenue! Due to the Reagan, Bush, Trump tax cuts. .. 3:WE need to restore tax rates on those making $400,000 or more to percentages equal to what they were in the sixties!

Corporate income tax rate before the Trump tax cuts: 35%

After the Trump tax cuts: 21%

What many corporations actually paid with loopholes: 14%

What Netflix, Bank of America, and Nike paid: Less than 5%

What Trump’s planning for a second term? Even more corporate tax cuts.
