hugs

as far as Goldwater's disgraceful behavior, i wasn't even in school yet when it happened, but i was sure AF old enough to see Ronald Reagan announce his 1980 candidacy in f'n Neshoba County to let all the white supremacists, haters, & pro-lynching yahoos know that the GOP was in their corner

i take hope that a steady % of humanity are heroes but i despair that a steady % of humanity are sociopaths who can't feel whole without hurting others

With a heat wave shattering temperature records across the country, let me just say that history will not look fondly on those who put fossil fuel profits above saving the planet.

@rbreich

they don't intend to leave us with anything, as the "great thinker" (yes that's sarcasm) Dumbya Bush once said, "who cares about history, we'll all be dead"

Tell me: how does it make sense that an entry-level federal employee is subject to more stringent ethics rules than Supreme Court justices?

there's a long-standing culture of corruption in the United States

The Biden Admin is requiring airlines to disclose add-on costs like baggage fees upfront.

It's expected to save fliers $500M/year by making it easier to comparison shop.

Would you be surprised if I told you that Trump's Admin fought against efforts to rein in airline junk fees?

not even a little bit surprised...

“Outrageously” priced weight-loss drugs could bankrupt US health care

Prices would need to be dramatically slashed to avoid increasing the national deficit.

@arstechnica

prices of drugs are made up

if the drugs are needed, then either put a firm price ceiling on the drug's price & arrest any Pharma Bro who don't like it-- or else nationalize the pharmaceutical industry & make the drugs the property of the taxpayer

allowing this industry to make up extortionate prices is a crime that kills people

@rbreich

that's a good summary but i just stick my one-liner

"Bill Clinton paid off the debt & left us a surplus, and all that did was give the GOP a motive to steal the next election"

IMO the reason the GOPs complain about the debt is because debt isn't money laying around for them to steal...

A survival guide for the end of the Solar System

Here are two options for future humans to keep us in the habitable zone.

@arstechnica

not to worry, we are now projected to leave the human habitable zone before 2050 so no need to concern ourselves with hundreds of millions of years in the future when we are not even dust...

Office Hours: Should parents be criminally responsible for a child who kills? https://robertreich.substack.com/p/office-hours-what-responsibility?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

peachfront ,
@peachfront@toot.community avatar

@rbreich

it's not hard

anyone who supplies a murderer with a weapon should be criminally responsible for their part in the crime

if somebody else gave the kid a gun & helped make sure the kid was at school to use it, wouldn't you want them prosecuted?

parents aren't a special protected class who can do as they please

i don't know why this is even a question
