The Biden Admin is requiring airlines to disclose add-on costs like baggage fees upfront.

It's expected to save fliers $500M/year by making it easier to comparison shop.

Would you be surprised if I told you that Trump's Admin fought against efforts to rein in airline junk fees?

@rbreich no, I'd just be shocked if trump didn't try to muscle in on a cut of the extortionate action

@rbreich Because rules demand to do the opposite of your political opponent.

@rbreich Anything negative associated with the trump admin is not surprising 🤷🏼

@rbreich
Airlines are fighting this as well.

@rbreich Well, as good as it sounds, it won’t change the bottom line. Airlines will still make money, but will eliminate their unrealistic cheap fares that used extra fees to get the funds from passengers. Net cost probably won’t change but fares might go up.
Fuel and salaries still are the same so operating costs don’t change.

@rbreich Uh, no. Not surprising. At all. In fact, I believe they claimed consumers LIKE these junk fees.

@rbreich Would be nice if this legislation also covered the event ticketing industry, e.g. TicketMaster. The fees are ridiculous and they are not shown until checkout. Imagine buying groceries and finding out at the register that $400 of groceries will cost an extra $100 in "convenience fees." But this is how the ticketing industry works.

@rbreich UK Government doing the same. We call it "drip pricing" and it's soon to be banned.

@rbreich Undisclosed fees and pricing is the junkyard dog of capitalism. Right up there with greedflation.
