The number one thing we should still be discussing from the debate is that Trump refused to rule out another January 6 attack.

If you think the Supreme Court is out of control now, imagine if Trump appoints two, three, or four more justices.

trabex ,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@rbreich

Looking at their decisions from the last few years, I don't think we should have conservative justices on the court ever again.

I can't believe I even have to say this, but it is not normal that the Supreme Court is taking its sweet time to decide if a former president is immune from prosecution for inciting an insurrection to overturn an election. This should have been decided already. The answer is no!

trabex ,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@rbreich

The Supreme Court in 1974 took 54 days to decide this question for Richard Nixon. It's been at least 112 days for the current court with nothing yet.

I'd wager they are waiting until after the election to see which way the wind is gonna blow.

A wildfire burns outside Los Angeles.

New England will face heat as high as 107° this week.

Florida neighborhoods are under water.

Meanwhile, Trump has called the climate crisis a "hoax" and has promised to roll back Biden's clean energy investments and "drill, baby, drill."

I live in New Hampshire. There was a year, perhaps it was last year? We had so much rain that some of the local rivers were close to flooding.

Most years, we have drought conditions during the summer. This one looks to be especially bad.

Where are the editorials calling for Trump to drop out of the race and allow Republicans to choose a non-felon as their nominee?

trabex ,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@rbreich

I could do one, I suppose. But Republicans have shown time and again they have no patience for evidence, no preference for reality, and every indication that they will overturn everything and anything to get their way.

It would be a plea falling on deaf ears.

By refusing to recuse himself from Jan 6 cases, Alito is violating the court's code of ethics, which call for recusal when “the Justice’s impartiality might reasonably be questioned…”

If flying 2 pro-insurrection flags doesn't call his impartiality into question, what does?

trabex ,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@rbreich

Every conservative / Republican justice should recuse themselves based on that standard. But they won't, because they have no shame. They don't particularly care how far they drag the court's name down into the mud.

Trump set the overtime pay threshold at a disgraceful $35,500 per year. Biden just raised it to $58,600.

Biden banned noncompete agreements. A plaintiff trying to reverse the ban is a Trump tax adviser.

Biden is fighting for workers. Trump wants to tear them down.

trabex ,

@rbreich

The idea that there's an overtime pay threshold at all makes me really skeptical about employers these days.

So far this week...

The FTC banned the use of noncompete clauses.

The DOL strengthened overtime rules.

The FCC restored .

The DOT expanded protections for airline passengers.

This is what it looks like when the government works on behalf of the people.

There were 4,349 book bans across the US during the fall 2023 semester.

That's more than the bans reported during the entire 2022 school year.

Nothing scares conservatives more than a multi-racial generation of young people who ask critical questions and speak truth to power.

trabex ,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@rbreich

It goes a little deeper than that.

The political divide in America is between those who prefer the truth and those who prefer falsehood.

The left prefers truth. The right prefers lies.

In order to make the lies believeable, they've decided to censor information as much as possible. They're going after libraries and colleges.

It's largely not going to work, because information is free to anyone with an internet connection, which I suppose is their next target.

Remember, in each of Trump's criminal trials, he was indicted by a grand jury made up of ordinary citizens.

Trump is lying when he says President Biden had anything to do with it.

trabex ,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@rbreich

Determining whether Trump is lying or telling the truth is easy. If he's talking, he's lying.

According to the WaPo: “Donald Trump has privately said he could end Russia’s war in Ukraine by pressuring Ukraine to…cede Crimea and the Donbas border region to Russia.” Did we learn nothing from WWII and the danger of appeasement? Give an inch, he'll take it all.

trabex ,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@rbreich

If you have to ask whether Trump learned something, the answer is always no. He doesn't learn things. He just hires people who know more than he does, and then doesn't pay them.
