r/sysadmin and the size of this community

So I have been a part of this community for a while and it seems pretty quiet. I know Lemmy is not as big as Reddit so this community will always be much smaller but I kind of miss the activity on r/sysadmin. Infinity for Reddit still works for view only so I have been scrolling though posts on Reddit as some of the stories and...

Yup I've thought about this recently and I think the big problem is people expect Reddit when Reddit evolved over time. Here you have hundreds of subs existing where the user base doesnt match the need for it.

Use Canada as an example. I'm sure on Reddit Canada started first then as it grew the need for provinces and cities. Here we have Canada and I'm sure provinces and cities. Everyone should just be in Canada. When the user base grows it will naturally splinter to smaller like minded communities.

We are trying to rebuild the wheel when the wheel is not needed.

I’d say they’re doing it to themselves. Feminism doesn’t come across as inclusive, and has a “fall in line or get left behind” mentality.

And on this I’d say I blame the parents most of all. I consider myself a feminist and grew up in an extended family of strong female figures. At no point was feminism (the word) discussed. What was, was an understanding that women are equal to men and deserve everything that a man has be it good or bad.

The problem is that many people fell on feminism as an ideal to latch on to without better understanding and espousing the core principles behind it.

Fast forward to now where I am a 46 year old man with a daughter and 2 boys I have far more concern for the boys than the girl and I make sure as often as possible to stress the principles of feminism and not just the word.

For women, “a rising tide lifts all boats”. Just as many men (I like to include myself) are doing all we can to bring women to a place of equality, women must also be beholden on themselves to ensure men do not get left behind.

Epoch is your friend, or use UTC. At least that’s my layman reasoning. I have no challenges working with DateTime except when I don’t know the underlying conditions applied from the source code.

Toxic masculinity is a thing and it needs to be addressed by these large media companies.

My 13 year old was joking about “Andy Tate” in a neutral way so I asked him where he was hearing that name. He couldn’t give me an answer but I know he’s on discord and YouTube primarily. I know I’m constantly blocking channels with Joe Rogan content (wtf is with the dozens of highlight channels of his drivel?).

I understand freedom of speech but to young impressionable minds this shit is dangerous and I don’t think without strong punitive measures these people will stop.

“I’m just asking questions bro”

“Broseph I don’t hate women but maybe the hunter/gatherer relationships are important”

“Maybe things were better when things were simpler”

Preying on impressionable minds is what they’re all doing without providing any context to their bullshit.

Beyond that, the boys ain’t alright. The world continues to shift away from historical patriarchal control and many men are threatened by this and right or wrong many of them feel they’re being left behind.

Look at post secondary enrollment numbers by gender trended over the decades. Boys are checking out of the system. It’s an uphill battle for me as a father and as a man trying to provide positivity to young boys knowing the ecosystem around them routinely portrays them in an unrealistic light on both spectrums.

Note I have not seen Andrew Tate on my computer or any other outside of Coffeezilla reporting. Joe Rogan bullshit on the other hand… it’s goddamn pervasive.

As an aside I’ve also noticed the same with twitch streamers who look very similar. MoistCr1TiKaL and Asmongold. I’ve also blocked both of them because as a father, I get a weird Spidey sense from both of them. I may be wrong, but the similar pattern gives me cause for concern.
