Are 'reddit-like' federated instances trying fit a square peg into a round hole? ( kbin.social )

Rather than try to act like a link aggregator where people submit links to articles and images and that submission comes with a comment thread specific to the fediverse instance in which it was submitted, what if each news site, image host, blog, whatever was itself the instance and the reddit-style instances federate with...

Another Threads prediction - The modern EEE version ( kbin.social )

Everyone seems to be pointing to the Microsoft EEE model without explaining how it has changed since the 90s. Here's what it will look like in today's tech climate. (I forgot to mention in this wall of text that there will probably be a name change or two. Especially if there's a major controversy.)...

How are you doing relative to the 1x by 30 / 2x by 35 / 3x by 40 salary rule for retirement savings? ( kbin.social )

/r/personalfinance was one of my more frequented subreddits and I find it pretty valuable. I figure I should try to help get the ball rolling over in the Fediverse and it seems like this is the most active substitute so far....

The best way to protest against reddit is simply to not interact with Reddit ( kbin.social )

I see a lot of posts about how they uploaded anti-spez stuff onto reddit, or participated in the nsfw spams/john oliver spams. While I get wanting to let it all out, this ultimately keeps up engagement on reddit rather than bringing it down....

Be wary of spiteful Reddit users ( kbin.social )

In the past week and a half, I've noticed Reddit behaviors starting to try and poison all of the places that people are taking refuge in to get away from the toxicity, myself included. They've started to DDoS Lemmy for a while, which is a Reddit thing to do and what they're notorious of doing whenever they feel they don't like...

Cost friendly data backup ( kbin.social )

I have a synology NAS where I backup my photos to. What would be the most cost effective way to encrypt and back up this data without having to purchase another NAS and install it at a family member's house. It would be about 5 TB and would not touch the data unless my NAS completely takes a crap.

While larger, more general communities are thriving on the Fediverse - I'm missing out on the niche communities ( kbin.social )

Gaming, news, tech, general literature. All of these are somewhat thriving, with a steady influx of posts and comments. At the same time, the userbase is sorely lacking for more niche communities. In my case it'd be stuff like poetry, yoga, religion, linguistics, meditation. Or many other communities I'd doubt they'd form a...

Reddit activated a word filter that whenever you say "fuck spez", your comment won't show up for anyone else. I just tested it on ModCoord. they're also deleting spez memes from the subs they nuked lol ( kbin.social )

r/ModCoord: The admins in charge of demodded subreddits are mass-removing images of Huffman previously shared on them...
