YSK: Noticing cracks in your drywall or foundation? Beware of foundation companies
This happened to me a while back but I thought it would be good to share to possibly save someone 10s of thousands of dollars....

This is an odd one. The only whole house shut off is on the city side of my meter and the person from public works I talked to said only the city could operate it and if it were to break while I operated it I could be held financially liable....

Hi everyone!...
I just moved to a new house, and after setting up my washing machine it now shakes a lot while running, like it moves itself 3 or 4 inches sometimes. It seems to really shake for a 5-15 seconds then runs normal for a while. No real discernible pattern....
It's on everything, my fingernails are glued to my skin underneath, I hate everything and most of all I hate spray foam....
I know this is a cleaning request than a home improvement one, but I would appreciate some advice....
So my home office is in our basement while my wife’s is in a finished attic space. We have a mini split system, but it has to be all heat or all cooling, and many days it’s cold in my office, but hot in my wife’s office....
Works good 👍
I live in a pretty old house in the midwest, built 1929, bought in '21, single-story, ~1300ish sqft, and with a large, spacious basement. Every time summer comes around I've had issues with the basement getting MUCH colder than the rest of the house (like >10 degrees F difference), presumably due to poorly-insulated floors and...
Hi all....
Hi all. I have a 2 storey, ~1200 sq ft home in a hot climate. I have a single HVAC unit...central air and ductwork, electric AC/heat. There is no zoning to the system. The thermostat is downstairs....
So it’s currently 100 degrees F in my garage today. I’m sure it will only get worse as the summer goes on. I added some of those insulated garage door panels, but I don’t think they did anything....
In the last couple of years, I replaced all my lawn care equipment with battery powered and it has worked fantastically. I’m sure there will soon be other large batteries that need to be charged....
Hi all,...
I just got a DIY kit quote for solar and it’s ~$18,000. That would mean a contractor installing is at least $25,000 if not more. That’s a big chunk of change upfront.
I’m a very light sleeper, so I have blackout stickers on my bedroom window. (They’re vinyl sheets that stick to the inside of the window with water.) I’ve used these most of my life with no issue. Well, I moved from the city and my new place is in a wooded area. I’m hearing birds and squirrels bonk into the window...
This is not the first time I’ve ranted about the previous owner’s wiring jobs, though I think they were on the other site (and I had a different username there)....
EDIT: I’ve attached a rough map of the situation. The laundry room is the little room in the middle. The red dot is where the dryer vents into the garage....
About 2-3 years ago the line clogged and I didn’t catch it for a while and we had some serious water damage. It just clogged again and I caught it pretty quick but it could have been bad....
In my kitchen I have a flushmount light with an integrated led. I put in an LED dimmer on the switch and all is working well....
I’ve been noticing an occasional sewer smell in my bathroom, and finally realized it’s only present when it’s below freezing outside. As soon as the weather warms up, the smell goes away. For reference, my house was built in '55 and the toilet is plumbed into the original steel sewer line. There are no leaks (everything...
Here is my problem: I have an old house - nearly 100 years old - that I need to insulate but I have a few problems and concerns I need to deal with. The walls are essentially stone and an old kind on solid cement block....
Has anyone had good experiences with a saltless water softener/conditioner in their home?...
I had a heat pump installed about a year ago. It came with one free service and the installing company has been calling me almost every week to come out and do the complimentary tune up. I know that I obviously should take a free tune up, but it made me wonder. How often do I actually need this done? What are they actually...
