44 million Americans — including 13 million children — are food insecure.

Meanwhile, America's 813 billionaires are now worth a combined $5.7 trillion.

Our problem isn’t an issue of resources.

Our problem is ever-expanding wealth inequality.

ummm ... say Bob? what's the number of people starving in Palestine? surely you might remember Palestine that for some unexplainable reason is called these days, "the West Bank and Gaza" ...

@rbreich I believe I have a solution.

@rbreich We have the same problem in the UK. Food banks are now commonplace and are struggling to get donations because even people in full time employment are tightening their belts due to continuing price rises so donating food that you can't afford yourself isn't an option.
Unfortunately our politicians are very good at making promises but not keeping them. We have a general election this year and a lot of people have no idea who to vote for as they don't trust of believe any of them

LanguageMan1 ,

@rbreich Absolutely true, but the number is actually higher than that today.

@rbreich And the problem is not just confined to the USA!

@rbreich

Their full conscious intent is to continue starving millions, and as many more of us as they can until they reach whatever level of “pleased with the direction” they’re looking for.

We’ve entered the open animosity phase of the divide where the top looks down and says quite clearly, “What are you gonna do. Really.”

And of course, it is the wealthy who own those buildings. People who don't even live in your city but they want your money. And management is always a shortcut so profits can be greater. The heat stays on when it is 80 outside. You tell them and they say that "you complain too much"... That one actually happened...

I'm just a guy who goes to work and then pays his bills.

I am housing insecure at the moment and that is even worse. I have enough money but will have to move soon and need to deal with the possibility of slumlords, the possibility of bad management, the issue of just finding and getting into a place...

I have an excellent rental history and excellent credit as well. But then I run into things like online applications where they want $53 from a credit card. I don't do credit cards. So that becomes a roadblock. It's stupid. Give me a chance.

@rbreich this is the same everywhere now, sad thing is people in the middle think somehow they will go up to the 1% rather than ending at the bottom even though they know 1% have shut the gates long ago and are still using their labor begrudgingly until it can be fully eliminated to fill up any cracks that might allow any trickle down...

asformack ,

@rbreich is it better to refer to ever expanding greed rather than ever expanding inequality. It feels like greed is harder to justify with a straight face than inequality. Inequality can always be blamed on someone else whereas greed cannot

enoch_exe_inc ,
@enoch_exe_inc@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich The problem is lack of redistribution, even on a small scale, as well as an absolute, rock-solid, unshakeable faith in supply-side economics. If the 1% suddenly, magically, decided to pay their taxes, it would be enough to lift everyone on Earth out of poverty.

@rbreich Yep greed is the problem until it at the very least it is brought under control the inequality will continue to grow.

NeilJrm ,

@rbreich that allied to a political system that is powerless and /or empowers wealth inequality to entrench and broaden.

@rbreich I hate that Senior Citizens on Social Security are not automatically eligible for food stamps. They have to get practically nothing to get food assistance and since things are expensive, most of them can’t afford food and pay bills.
