@georgetakei Amazon has what you're going to buy next already set aside for you in the warehouse. Not a joke.

@georgetakei

Huh.

Thanks, adblocker!

@georgetakei Congrats for finding something worse than when you're watching a scary video and it interrupts with the cheeriest ad possible.

@georgetakei

If he's using the same computer you do, then the ads are aimed at you.

@georgetakei Think of how much effort goes into acquiring (often unethically) our personal information and yet the algorithms are still so far off. They claim they're offering something valuable to the purchasers of said advertisements.

I go to great lengths to block advertisements and prevent my personal information from being taken. Even when I can't block an ad, I selectively do so by ignoring or muting. For people like myself, the advertising game is a complete waste. It boggles my mind that so much money is being spent on the industry. It boggles my mind still further that corporations feel it's worth the expenditure.

Once upon a time, the complaints were chiefly about the holidays being commercialized. The reality now is far worse. Our whole life experience has been taken over by commercialization. It's everywhere and so gross.

I can imagine an alternate future, but I just don't know how we can realistically get there. People would have to matter more than profit...

@georgetakei i see this as a teachable moment... "You see, son, if you do your part with the Swiffer when you're married, you're less likely to need the other things on here."

@georgetakei “You see son… you are being watched and listened to at all times. No no, it’s not god, it’s the almighty algorithm! And if you are good, maybe, just maybe you will be shown an ad that has some relevance to what you are interested in!”

I keep getting ads for these stupid kids toys crammed into giant plastic eggs. I have no kids, nor search for anything child related. I could do with some more boxes of wine though. 😅 🍷

Meanwhile, Facebook Marketplace's algorithm, despite having a decade's-worth of data on me, my interests, and interactions . . .

  1. 🚫 I am not shopping for another car.
  2. 🚫 Almost! I am interested in musical instruments . . . but this one is six hours from where I live.
  3. 🚫 I also do not plan on dying.
