@arstechnica could be great if all of it was stored and ran on device. I have been looking at building an AI server for home for that kind of stuff but I cant afford it lol
@arstechnica it's perhaps a good thing that it only works on Arm chips with NPUs, because if they tried to roll that out more generally, and switched it on by default, that would be a whole new level of creepy. 😬
@arstechnica exactly what you want when creating or issuing TLS or SSH certificates, entering passwords, doing financial transactions, communicating with loved ones, providing references, remotely attending funerals, seeking medical advice
@arstechnica Exactly what the non-windows-specific rewind.ai does. But at least in rewind’s case the processing is private and local to one’s machine. I don’t subscribe, but it’s easy to think of reasons it could be useful as a kind of augmented memory.
They make a point of saying they will not "use them for targeting advertisements". But I assume they eventually will use them for that! (Probably deep in some ToS change.) 🙄
@arstechnica In Stellaris, when I wanted to create a Berserker faction spreading out from Earth, this is why I named it "AmaSoft". 😛. The faction description is "All that was left on Earth after the Corporate Wars".
@arstechnica Classic example of trying to shift the Overton window, i.e. to move the unthinkable (dystopian) into the realm of the possible in the public discourse. The main use is not the product itself, but the profits that MS can extract from the shift in the discourse space: us all to be more ready to accept the lesser evil.
@arstechnica yes yes, of course we'll process it locally.. and THEN once you've done that work for us, we'll transmit that sweet metadata to our private servers to analyse.
isn't this the same as the whatsapp approach? i.e. provide hand-wavey reassurance "dont worry, your messages are end to end encrypted - we can't read them!"...
meanwhile, behind the curtain, the app processes your messages locally and thanks to the metadata you provided us, we know what ads to send you....
