@arstechnica

During the start of covid, I helped a church I was connected to go online.

We were pinged for copyright playing

  1. recordings over 80 years old
    AND
  2. were published by the denomination that church belonged to
    AND
  3. were originally written in the early to mid 1800's

Someone claimed ownership of one or more of the arrangement, melody or lyrics.

I'm talking about songs like "O COME, O COME EMMANUEL", which dates back to the 12th century and was translated into English in the1850's.

@arstechnica @siracusa I’m sorry but this is absolutely fucking hilarious

Also obligatory Tom Scott https://youtu.be/1Jwo5qc78QU

Because yeah, it’s fucked up? But it’s also the copyright system working as designed. The problem is not YouTube. The problem is copyright.

@arstechnica so this guy is monetizing his play of a game made by someone else but his video is taken down because his washing machine plays a jingle made by someone else and that jingle was uploaded to YouTube by someone else who's monetizing it... Ok, the copyright law is fucked up. Public domain for everything!
