The live audio for the oral arguments can be found here: https://www.supremecourt.gov/oral_arguments/live.aspx

They will begin at 10:00 a.m. EST, or for those who are more civilized folk: 9:00 a.m. CST.

Here we go … (in 30 minutes)!

Is decentralised federated social media over engineered?

Can't get this brain fart out of my head.

What would the simplest, FOSS, alternative look like and would it be worth it?

Quick thoughts:

  • FOSS platforms intended to be big single servers, but dedicated to ...
  • Shared/Single Sign On
  • Easy cross posting
  • Enabling and building universal Multi-platform clients.
  • Unlike email, supporting small servers

No duplication/federation/protocol required, just software.

@maegul How would servers share accounts and passwords? Allowing any server to know what a user’s password should be is not very good for security.

@Sean Nice pun :D

I don’t think requiring users to use a really long and virtually unmemorizable password (the private key) would be a pretty good idea for a social network either.

@joeldebruijn Ah, that makes much more sense. I guess this could be also used for phishing, but that may be unavoidable.

@Sean Not all devices support passkeys.

Unmemorizable passwords are not the kind I like to use. I'd rather be able to login on some random incognito guest computer.

Gentle reminder to everyone that support for ends in about 90 weeks. Many computers can't upgrade to Win 11 so here are your options:

  1. Continue on Win 10 but with higher security risks.
  2. Buy new and expensive hardware that supports Win11.
  3. Try a beginner friendly distro like . It only takes about two months to acclimate.

@ajayiyer that is, assuming they don’t release new Windows versions

What’s wrong about it? It makes it clearer why 1. The seating is ridiculous 2. Such frustration is ridiculous. How is the graph the punchline? The idea is the punchline.

As in you're using the service, but that doesn't mean you two are one and make the same decisions.

Let's put it this way: Just because they live under an oppressive regime doesn't mean we should be mean to them and keep them isolated in their evil bubble.

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

Say, many would agree that Han people in China are oppressed. They have a ton of middle-class citizens who are free to leave the country, they just don't want to permanently due to not thinking it'd be better.

Same applies to Threads, though maybe a stronger case for leaving.

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

Han people are the main ethnicity of China; they aren’t the Uyghurs, if that’s what you mean

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

You could also say they wanted space and backyards, which could also be negative but sounds much more reasonable. You can't directly align nationalism with fascism. I mean yeah, it's a core component, but nationalism isn't that automatically fascism.

News: Sen. Elizabeth Warren wants to build a new agency to police Big Tech ( www.theverge.com )

The bill, sponsored by Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), would create a new agency called the Digital Consumer Protection Commission that would be empowered to go after giant tech firms for a slew of anti-competitive behaviors and failing to protect consumer privacy.

I prefer the second.

Replace it with an anarchy government!

Aatube ,

I'd prefer the current state of affairs than the tech industry getting restricted by a budge SCOTUS. It doesn't exist, but it's still better than the other, since the SCOTUS people probably benefit corporate anyways

Anybody remember Usenet? ( kbin.social )

So I've finally been doing my little reddit/twitter migration against my better judgement (my better judgement would say to take the opportunity to get off the internet but who listens to that loser). I'm finding all these platforms interesting, I particularly like how kbin combines both formats and links up to Mastodon, that's...

Apple and Android already have them, unless you didn't fill it in.
